Create 2023 ACJ Events #58

So I cloned the live environment to https://acjstg.wpengine.com/ where we can use as the stage. I also hooked up the 'Distributor' plugin which 'should' enable us to push new content live w/o needing to overwrite the database.

@angelcityjazz I forget what we did last year (or the year before) - one way to do it would be to start with the first event from last year (https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/storytellers/) and hit Duplicate Post (in the top right). If you're still happy with the format, just update the blocks. Just keep in mind the 'missing' blocks aren't actually missing - you should be able to see the changes by hitting Preview or just saving.

That's probably enough info, but please let me know if it's not - and leave comments about issues you come across or improvements the layout look and feel.

@angelcityjazz I wish the event creation process was a bit cleaner (still hoping we can fix) but the end result is quite good! I created the menu item so you could easily access and track process. https://acjstg.wpengine.com/events/

I'm planning on spending time over the upcoming week making fixes and improvements to the theme (including a fix to the annoying missing block issue!).

So keep the feedback coming and I'll followup whenever there's progress and stuff to review when I dive back in!

First thing I wanted to try was using e04a09 and eda510 as the primary and secondary colors (and omitting the blue that we've used before).

To me it seems to work better - jump out more - maybe too much.

Also wanted to see how those colors looked like if eda510 was primary and e04a09 secondary. For a quick comparison I replaced the 252c71 (blue) you set for primary and left the secondary as is (since you already added e04a09).

With that in mind, compare and contrast these landing pages along with the event pages and let me know if either work -

Keep in mind that some of the other landing pages have blocks, headers, titles, and text where the colors could be more consistent.

I can experiment on the dev site based on what primary/secondary combo you think works best.

Ok, I'll check out the theme color variants. In the meantime, I'm having some frustrating issues updating the pages as I randomly get these error messages: 'updating failed. The response is not a valid JSON response' This seems to be random and if I keep trying to update eventually it works but I'm wasting a lot of time. Sometimes I have to wait an hour and try again.

One more thing. When I'm getting those JSON messages, often if I try to open a new page, I'll get this message:

429 Too Many Requests

Also, if I try to upload images I get this message: The server cannot process the image. This can happen if the server is busy or does not have enough resources to complete the task. Uploading a smaller image may help. Suggested maximum size is 2560 pixels.

This is really slowing down my process

I saw some of those issues when skimming through what you set up - figured I'd do one round of cleanup and improvements after you were done (just say the word).

Regarding the errors you've been pointing out - I'll log here and will troubleshoot next chance I get.

I feel like a couple of these have been issues before (so I'll find the fix). Considering @tonyzeoli now has experience using the same platform (on the same hosting environment) - he probably recognizes those issues and could easily suggest a fix or reference a best practice if he gets a chance.

@angelcityjazz Is the message you're getting similar to what was happening in https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/32? I haven't been able to replicate or seen a screengrab of your current issue. But maybe they are similar?

When I'm getting those JSON messages, often if I try to open a new page, I'll get this message: 429 Too Many Requests

That again seems like a known/common issue where I'm hoping our worpress/WP engine expert, @tonyzeoli will be able to help troubleshoot or advise on solutions.

I try to upload images I get this message: The server cannot process the image. This can happen if the server is busy or does not have enough resources to complete the task. Uploading a smaller image may help. Suggested maximum size is 2560 pixels.

Admittedly I was new to WordPress and the scope/looming deadline of the initial launch didn't provide much opportunity for providing/documenting best practices uploading and displaying media. We're planning on providing that (and reviewing/improving overall performance) once we launch our community media pilot (which you've already paid into) and subsequent services. In the meantime I can try to resolve specific issues (if you log them) as quickly as possible.

Hi GUs, there is a spacing issue for some of the events. Whenever we have sponsors the text to the right of the main event image doesn't lin up with the image. Urgent issue:

All of a sudden the right sidebar I use to edit event pages (main photo, tags, excerpts, etc) has disappeared and I can't figure out how to get it back. I'm trying to finish adding events today but I'm stuck now until the sidebar is functional again.

Here is a text formatting issue. Although the text has been imputed correctly when the browser page size is changed the word 'that' gets broken up (see attached screenshot). Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

I logged all the issues in the description https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/58#issue-1695124519 and realized it would be better for me to go through every event and check/tweak the formatting (wherever necessary).

I'm focusing first on the issues you've pointed out and should get through those tomorrow (your today).

Adding https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/mat-maneri-quartet-ennis-harris-chamber-jazz-ensemble/ to the fix list as the media columns aren't balanced (see screengrab) - it probably has something to do with the audio player embed (which I don't think I've used) - will troubleshoot and fix on Sunday or Monday.

Although the text has been imputed correctly when the browser page size is changed the word 'that' gets broken up (see attached screenshot). Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

I 'think' I fixed the issue just by going through and making sure there weren't any unexpected line break - let me know if you can replicate on https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/nicole-mitchells-jbm-images-beyond-new-music-usa-njl-showcase/

Generally speaking the copy is a inconsistent in certain pages and blocks (mainly the bios) - I'm assuming this is because you're copying and pasting from another source (not surprising - didn't expect you to write new bios for everybody!).

That said, it would be best to have a writer/editor read through and make revisitations wherever appropriate. I make a few revisions where it was obvious there should be a new paragraph. Maybe I can get Stacy (my partner/editor/writer/singer) to have a look.

Are you still in the process of making changes (ticket links, prices, etc) until then?

We should probably go through the checklist at the top of this issue - I haven't looked at the stage in a bit and am noticing a couple issues which I'll log.

there is a spacing issue for some of the events. Whenever we have sponsors the text to the right of the main event image doesn't lin up with the image. The images on those pages load fine for me. Bow do I fix it? I will look for other potential issues. This week I still need to do some editing, specifically to add all of the ticketing links. May e we can push the website update to Saturday so that we have an extra day in case something comes up.

Probably because you deleted the price button before setting the price to free (or the suggested donation) - to fix I added the buttons and adjusted the price on the following - https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/samrivers100/ https://acjstg.wpengine.com/event/angel-city-jazz-vernacular-intergenerational-improvisation-night/

I think it would be better to leave those and have the button text say 'Register Now' (or something like that). That would be consistent with 'Buy Now' that you've been using for button text on the paid events.

I noticed a problem with the eventbrite embed. For the 10/14 event with Destiny Muhammad, I've set-up and published a ticketing page even though tickets will only go on sale on July 1st. I've tried to enter the new ticketing link but after updating it still reverts to the David Murray Trio (which I cloned the page from) ticketing page saying that the event has ended. I tried 10 times with the same result. Any ideas?

These two pages now have repetitive price info.

Generally speaking we haven't been putting price info in the buttons. I can see why it makes sense for events where the link doesn't go to a place to purchase or register.

If the button copy will remain the same then feel free to delete the price button (assuming the prices are now correct on https://acjstg.wpengine.com/events/)

Not much better. Let’s use the blue or orange. Yellow is the worst color for that. Also can you please use a color that is already in the banner for the schedule background? I think it integrates much better that way.

Aside from the making the yellow darker (just to evaluate), I've only been using the primary/secondary colors (some combo of what you provided in https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/58#issuecomment-1538712901) and the variations the theme automatically generates.

Realizing I hadn't tried the 252c71 (blue) e04a09 (orange) combo, I added those as primary and secondary respectively in https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ and then added eda510 (yellow) in various sections and blocks on landing pages.

THAT combo seems to work really well on the event pages, but I did have to go back and make sure all the text was white. Also fixed a few more formatting issues.

Focusing on just the 2023 Events (and associated landing pages) what do you think about the colors and formatting now?

In terms of backgrounds on that page - right now background on the event grid is different than https://acjdev.wpengine.com/ (it's using a variation of the secondary color). Do you think it should be the same? If yes, I'll change it and will also play around with the other backgrounds.
