9/24/21, Eco-Stock Assessment

We discussed our goals for the short term (during this Openscapes workshop) and long term (generally, in the future, for our group).

GitHub

How you might use GitHub as a team? In general: we would like to use GitHub as a means to better collaborate across programs, divisions and Science Centers. @eeholmes shared a partial list of various government organizations that are using GitHub. Some team members commented that there is no organizational hierarchy within our Science Center related to GitHub orgs. Might a better organizational structure as it relates to teams foster better collaboration?

Or how do you already use it? If you already use it, how would you like to use it differently or better? The CB Ocean Acidification (OA) Program has extensively adopted GitHub for project management. The FRAM Population Ecology Program (PEP) uses Github to collaboratively develop code and track software versioning. The FRAM Data Team also uses Github to collaboratively develop code and track software versioning.

What are some things that need to happen to use it differently or better? @pmcelhany demo'd how the OA Program is using Project Boards, and it was very informative. Some team members shared that they have played with Project Boards in the past, with varying degrees of success. We all agreed that we need to see a number of examples of how project boards have been used successfully, so that we can try to promote their use in our teams and programs.

Cohort team plan What is your cohort team's goal for the 2021 NMFS Openscapes cohort? This is totally up to you. You can have multiple goals or just one. It can be concrete or loose.

Do you have a particular goal or task? For our next Seaside chat, our individual homework is to each come with a specific tip that we can share or question we can ask about how to better use GitHub, R, RMarkdown, RStudio, etc. to improve our workflows.

Do you mainly want to learn about the Openscapes mindset and how other groups are applying it? We are all interested in learning more about open data science and how we can better integrate the Openscapes principles into our teams and workflows!

Pathways We started our team [Pathway](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ih4Lz-YmVGHz18QFrzGR9B6v1VwghUGxl9BDPq6aQ) and will be modifying it as we move forward.

Hi Team!

As part of our homework, I just posted a summary of our first Seaside chat last Friday. When you have a chance, please read and comment with any changes you'd like me to add. I'm also including a task list so that we can mark when we've read the summary. This is my way to practice adding task lists and monitoring associated progress on an issue. Not sure how well this will work but we're all learning so I decided to give it a go. If you can't edit the original post and mark next to your name, please let me know.

Thanks for indulging me!

@Curt-Whitmire-NOAA thanks for starting this. I am not sure if you know that users can "edit" the original post directly rather than just making comments like this one that are posted below. I have found it useful for "master" level information to be in one place and "comments" or "discussion" to be below. That way when you come back months later you don't have to read through the entire issue to make sense of what was going on. @kellijohnson-NOAA thanks! That is precisely what I was wondering. Good to know we can all edit posts. I agree it is much better than having a ever-growing thread.

One thing to note is notification emails are not sent out when you "edit" an issue. Also, they are not sent if you use the emoji feature.

Good to know! Thanks!

Just a reminder that we have our next Seaside chat this Friday @ 11 am. Please remember our homework: to each come with a specific tip that we can share or question we can ask about how to better use GitHub, R, RMarkdown, RStudio, etc. to improve our workflows. I know some of you can't make it this week, but no worries, as those that can make it will provide a summary issue for the team to review.
