From Canvas: Summary: Write a two-paragraph (max) summary of the main customer need and how the application meets it, including who the stakeholders are.

If we each write one paragraph, I will read through and combine them all to get two paragraphs to turn in.

Our system should allow users to manually feed in data since parsing the PDF from Engineering CAS can be too complicated. At the top of the tree is the committee, which has the ability to appoint reviewers. Faculty who get assigned applications should be able to see it clearly. They can also query for any open applications. The committee and or faculty should be able to generate a report of a candidate, showing all reviews and ratings from 1-10. There should also be an ability to add supporting staff such as TAs, and GARs to a PhD student.

The PHD Application review system is a webapp designed for improving the current reviewing process of PHD applications, which is a google sheet. There is a hierarchical structure of users of the application; Committee chair, committee members, and faculty, in descending order. The committee chair can assign committee members an applicants to review. Faculty can review any application. All members can search for any application based on some filters. When writing a review, inputs are text, information about funding (if any), and a score from 1 to 5 (or 10). Finally, once an applicant has been reviewed x number of times, we can have a small equation to automatically categorize the applicant as tentative admit or tentative reject based on the score. A report containing the initial application, the reviews, scores, funding information, etc should be created in a pdf format so that the grad office can use it for further processing.

The main customer need addressed by our Ph.D. application review system is to streamline and simplify the complex process of reviewing and evaluating Ph.D. applications for faculty committee members and committee chairs. This application meets this need by providing an intuitive and user-friendly dashboard that allows users to efficiently manage and assess applications. Users can easily import application data in CSV and PDF formats, enabling the committee to access and evaluate candidate profiles effortlessly. The system offers robust features such as application viewing, searching, filtering, and assignment to facilitate the review process. Faculty members assigned to review applications can conveniently assess and score candidates on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 representing a strong rejection and 5 indicating a strong acceptance. The system automatically calculates a running average score as additional reviews and scores are added by different faculty members, providing a comprehensive assessment of each applicant. Furthermore, the system's capability to generate detailed PDF reports containing review feedback, scores, GAR (Graduate Assistantship Research) and TA (Teaching Assistantship) offers, as well as funding information, ensures seamless communication with the graduate office for further processing, fulfilling the key customer requirement of efficient application management and decision-making.
