About the Modpack
This fabric modpack is for Minecraft 1.17.1, and will only run on a legitimately purchased version of Minecraft Java Edition. It runs the official Mojang Caves & Cliffs Preview Datapack, and so has all the caves of 1.18, and with the addition of new biomes from various mods, has some of the cliff and mountain biomes as well. On top of all 1.17.1 features and most 1.18 features, it adds a ton of new content that feels decidedly close to vanilla Minecraft's gameplay.
This modpack was created with the following 4 philosophies in mind:
1. A mod should *never* actively hinder the vanilla experience, and only aim to add more, bigger or better features to what already exists in-game. More mobs, bigger structures, better game feel -- all without sacrificing the original items, creatures and gameplay concepts that make Minecraft the game everybody loves to play.
2. A mod should have the same amount of polish, care and detail put into it as any official Mojang vanilla feature: this includes conveyance to the player about mechanics the mod introduces, good graphical portrayal, good sound design and exceptionally fun game feel.
3. A modpack should, in total, create a sense of wonder in the player that keeps them engaged and encourages exploration.
4. A modpack should be stable -- at least as free from glitches and bugs as the vanilla game -- and should never introduce technical hoops for the player to jump through. Mechanics and modifications should be simple, understandable, and consistent.
With that in mind, some mods currently available for fabric contained features meeting these philosophies, while others did not and were not included. Some contained several features meeting these requirements, and several others that didn't -- those mods were further edited in their code, the sources for which can be downloaded from my forked repositories. And, of course, any mods not available for 1.17.1 were not included.

System Requirements
Vanilla Minecraft Java Edition
This modpack, while very large, actually won't require much more resources than Vanilla Minecraft. The system requirements for Minecraft Java Edition can be found below:

Minecraft Vanilla+ Definitive Edition
The mods will add some strain to your CPU and RAM requirements. GPU requirements will largely be unchanged. The installer is roughly 350MB and will install roughly 450MB of content.

How to Install
To install the modpack:
1. Grab the [latest release](https://github.com/SalvieMundi/DefinitiveEditionVanillaPlus/releases) of the installer (the "MinecraftModInstaller.zip" file).
2. Extract it to a folder anywhere on your machine.
3. Run the MinecraftModInstaller.exe file. A setup wizard should guide you through the rest of the install process.

I put the file in my mods folder, now what?

I can't find the Vanilla+ Definitive Edition installation in Minecraft Launcher!
Please use the official Mojang Minecraft Launcher, then select the version dropdown and select Vanilla+ Definitive Edition.

How can I change the settings for [insert mod name here]?
There is a new menu on the title screen and pause screen for mod settings. I highly suggest leaving the settings alone unless you know what they do. If you mess with a setting and it causes issues which you then report, the first thing I will ask is if you've messed with any of the mod settings. If you have, there is a very good chance I will refuse to work your ticket.
The game is laggy, what can I do?
If you notice that the game lags after very specific and replicable criteria (eg: it lags every time I fish in a jungle), then please [create a ticket](https://github.com/SalvieMundi/DefinitiveEditionVanillaPlus/issues) or [join my discord](https://discord.gg/d2w9ud3Bke) if you don't have a GitHub account. The game should run decently on any modern quad core CPU released in the last 3 to 5 years. However, the addition of so many mods means that even extremely beefy CPU's can struggle. Unfortunately, there is likely nothing you can do except upgrade your hardware. You can try [increasing the RAM](https://cubedhost.com/help/en/articles/1648388-how-do-i-allocate-more-memory-to-my-minecraft-launcher-client-side#h_64c91ada5f), but the garbage collection settings I use are very well optimized and aggressive, and so I don't anticipate this will help.
I'm having an issue with [insert mod name here], should I report the issue to you or the mod's developer?
Ideally, do both. When you open the ticket with the mod developer, please link them to this modpack and let them know that the modpack developer is a programmer by trade and willing to help debug (at this point some of the developers probably even know me). If you really must choose one or the other, report to me -- I can open a ticket with the mod developer on your behalf if necessary.

How long did it take to make this?
Nearly 5 months of nonstop work after quitting my job. I'm not going to lie, it was grueling. But I learned a lot about programming and a lot about the Minecraft modding community. And frankly, some of these mod developers have put in a lot more time than I have.
Why isn't this 1.18 / will you upgrade to 1.18?
This is not 1.18 because when I started this modpack in September of 2021, 1.18 wasn't out yet. Many of these mods don't even have a 1.18 version out yet. And I will not be upgrading to 1.18 because I have already put in all the bug testing and source code editing I can handle and I just want to play with my modpack. *If* I can manage to make a living off content creation, game development and freelance tech work when 1.19 rolls around, then I *may* create a new pack at that time with the same general direction.
