The preview is considered a screenshot in my opinion. Those screenshots show copyrighted material, thus, like with photos, publishing is not okay (think of why screenshotting and publishing a photo is forbidden, it's for the same reasons). I have strong doubts you can just screenshot a map and upload it. So, point 2 is problematic. I'd look for a license of the map first.
About point 1, it depends under which license the screenshots have been published. Like with the maps, either sharing is allowed, or not. Thus, without a license, it is not legal to just screenshot a map.
Can you elaborate on point 3? I have no clue what you're asking there.
What you can do is publish screenshots for licensed maps, whether they're uploaded or not. You can upload licensed screenshots as well. Anything else is most likely breaking copyright law.
Oh, by the way: This kind of screenshotting could in theory be a citation (German: Zitat bzw. Großzitat). However, this only applies for when being used in scientific literature. I guess it would be really, really hard to prove that either Red Eclipse or Redflare-Python are scientific research or work.
I have already feared about point 1. and 2.. I read something and yes, without a map license (or image license) we cannot upload a preview image.
About point 3. I thought we need a specification about when a map is a map. I mean i can create a 5min ugly map, without anything and call it a map.
But as far as i see about citation. We could write reviews about the maps and take/use a screenshot, however we still could not use it with redflare.
What about writing reviews about the maps. And redflare "show" just reviews 😆
(That would be greate idea 😋 The map name links to the review and shows the screenshot as thumbnail. And there are already some "reviews" on the RE wiki.)
🤔🤔🤔
Some server has user created maps, Currently redflare shows
unknown map
.Maybe we can add the map previews (not the map themself) into the Red Eclipse community repo?
I see some open questions.
