Fixes joyent/python-manta#8

Includes changes compatible with 2.x and 3.x and a little code cleanup.

This pull request is being rejected, not because the work is bad but because it sat for quite some time while development proceeded on the project. I just a pushed branch with python 3 support.

If you are still interested in Python 3 please see https://github.com/joyent/python-manta/tree/feature/python3. I just got all tests passing, but would like to see it it tested in some real world scenarios before we cut an official release.
