Possible error in guidelines on free relatives http://universaldependencies.org/en/overview/specific-syntax.html#free-relatives

I think "who" should be nmod (or obl in v2), not dobj. In annotating the CHILDES corpus, we always attach prepositional phrases to their dependent with nmod (except in copular constructions such as "He is in the shower.", where the PP itself is the head), and this is true for stranded prepositions. So we would annotate...

1 oh oh INTJ co 2 compound 2 no no INTJ co 6 discourse 3 what what PRON pro:wh 6 nmod 4 will will AUX mod 6 aux 5 he he PRON pro:sub 6 nsubj 6 write write VERB v 0 root 7 with with ADP prep 3 case 8 ? ? PUNCT ? 6 punct

1 what what PRON pro:wh 4 nmod 2 are be AUX aux 4 aux 3 you you PRON pro 4 nsubj 4 crawling crawl VERB part 0 root 5 on on ADP prep 1 case 6 ? ? PUNCT ? 4 punct

1 Adam Adam PROPN n:prop 5 vocative 2 what what PRON pro:wh 5 nmod 3 are be AUX aux 5 aux 4 you you PRON pro 5 nsubj 5 looking look VERB part 0 root 6 for for ADP prep 2 case 7 ? ? PUNCT ? 5 punct _

Is this a simple error, or is there something else going on, i.e. do we have it wrong?

Fixed by replacing dobj with nmod. @sebschu can you confirm?

See also (89) in http://universaldependencies.org/en/overview/specific-syntax.html with regard to stranded prepositions (preposition stranding). Guessing this policy still applies to v2.

sebschu commented 7 years ago

@nschneid Yes, that's correct. Thanks for fixing the example.

Confirmed correct.
