I can confirm, audio got stuck playing the same sound over and over again. Very gamebreaking and annoying too (game client restart required).
Did this only start happening recently? What kind of sound are you using? (surround/5.1, quad, stereo?)
I was stuck on the 5.1 audio because of the patch that crashed my game if I tried to change it. Now the audio change bug seems to have been fixed so I am back on headphones and I am not experiencing the issue anymore.
My wild guess would be that on 5.1 there is some driver (maybe?) issue and not releasing the OpenAL (I think? Not sure if you guys use OpenAL) sound sources for positional surround sound and that allocates too many of them and then it crashes altogether. Just speculation, obviously.
I remembered that I have seen this error message again when issue #185 happens. Maybe they are related?
Happend first time on 1/4/15 patch, still persists. "Error: Total static audio channels have been used: 96". Using 2 speakers, pulseaudio (pulseaudio&also work, only game audio gets stuck).
Can confirm ever since 4/1/15 patch roughly every 3 games audio gets stuck in loop. Running pulse audio on Ubuntu 14.04. I also noticed that the directional quality of sound seems off ever since the patch. If someone is running/walking right next to me, it sounds like he's diagonally behind me
I confirm issue with my computer since a few days. The last 1 second sound is playing again and again, and no other sound is played. I'm forced to restart CS.
My computer works on Ubuntu 14.04, with a GeForce GTX 970 4Go (official driver nVidia 343.19).

Can confirm. I've only had this happen in competitive games and it is very annoying. I have my sound on 5.1.
For people having trouble with this issue, you can switch from 5.1 to speakers or speakers to 5.1 when you have problem ; it's working for me.
Same issue here, sound gets stuck, and console gets flooded with. "Error: Total static audio channels have been used: 96". First appereance with patch 01/04/2015.
And i also noticed what sphuber said
"I also noticed that the directional quality of sound seems off ever since the patch. If someone is running/walking right next to me, it sounds like he's diagonally behind me"
No way to get positions right.
Started happening for me after the March 31st update. I'm using default stereo sound with 2 speakers.

Can confirm this on Arch Linux, sound direction is off which makes sound useless anyway and then loops after 2-3 games.

Can confirm both the looping sound issue and sound direction issue on Arch Linux. When I had the looping sound issue, my speaker configuration was set to "5.1 speakers", and I changed it to "headphones" to fix it (though I'm assuming it gets fixed no matter what you set it to, since it probably needs to reset a few things relating to audio whenever you change it). The past few days, the sound looping issue has occured 2 out of 2 times I've played on de_shorttrain, and not once during the other ~20 games I've played on other maps.
When I noticed the sound direction was a bit off, the speaker configuration was set to "2 speakers", I changed it back to "headphones", and didn't notice any sound direction issues afterwards. It appears to reset to "2 speakers" every time I start csgo, even though I'm using a headset.

I've noticed the same issue many times too.
Confirmed on Ubuntu 14.04, 64bit In console: "Error: Total static audio channels have been used: 96" PC configuration: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/ff324fd7d67d9fc1b722 Video of problem: https://youtu.be/eXZ3E7EKsp4 This is not problem in drivers or hardware, becouse to update certain it worked as it should.
I haven't had this issue again since I changed the ingame audio configuration from 5.1 to 2 speakers.

After how many affected users Valve will correct a very embarrassing bug of a game we paid for ?
I think that Linux users are not a priority...
well if you look at this github now, it feels that developers/mods have abandon this place.
CSGO updates thursdays, so best you can hope for is next week.
Please try to keep the discussion relevant and the comments useful. This is not a social network, keep your opinions to yourselves and stay technical.
So like your comment? Nothing technical about it fucking retard
Please keep behavior civil, @deri82 .
Does adjusting the mem_max_heapsize and mem_min_heapsize convars alleviate this for you at all? These default to 256 and 48. Try setting them both to 512 and tell me if that alleviates the problem.
@davidw-valve : it's not possible to modify these cvars, they have the FCVAR_DEVELOPMENTONLY flag (or they don't have the FCVAR_RELEASE one).
Yes, sorry that won't work.
Does this still happen for anyone with their audio set to headphones? How much RAM do you have on your system?
After I switched from 5.1 to headphones I have stopped getting this bug HOWEVER, it seems to still appear once in a blue moon (I'm talking like once every two weeks of playing every day or so for multiple hours), it's not as much of a bother since I just restart the game and at worst I'll be missing a round, but still something that might be worth looking into.
I have 8GB of RAM on my system but I am playing on an intel integrated GPU so a lot of it is allocated by the GPU itself so that's something to keep in mind. I think I get around ~6GB of RAM used when I am playing CSGO (I also have chrome + firefox + some other programs open in the background too).

It still happens to me from time to time, but more rarely it seems and I am using headphones 2.0 exclusively with 16GB RAM. When it happens I can solve it by switching to a different audio output and switching back to headphones. That fixes the issue
In my case it reduce probability of this problem, but the problem still appears occasionally. 8GB
I am having a great deal reproducing this problem which unfortunately makes it difficult to diagnose and fix. If anyone notices any way to make this occur more consistently it would be very helpful!
I'm developing a CS GO plugin and need to do quite a lot of tests. The game always stay open and I need to reconnect to my server a lot. After a few games (or probably playing for a while), I end up having this issue. Reconnecting to the server won't fix it. I found out that setting sv_cheats to 1 on my server and using snd_restart fixes it though, until the next time it happens. I have 8 GB ram.
One thing that might be relevant, although I'm not sure. I am an avid alt+tabber, I always alt+tab to other applications when I play, for example when I'm dead in a game or whatnot. I'm not 100% sure if there's any correlation but the sound is more skippy right when I tab back into the game and sometimes this has triggered the problem. However, this is not the only instance when the problem occurs. I have noticed it happens when there's some minor stuttering of resources, so some intermittent frame drops (my PC isn't that powerful). My very wild guess would be that it might be related to some I/O operation done in the background (shader computing? resource streaming/loading?) that might hang and not be released and that might corrupt audio memory.
Again, this is a VEEERY wild guess, as I am not familiar with the architecture of the game or its code whatsoever.

Like many people, I've been seeing this problem, but not often enough to make reproducing it "easy". Maybe once a competitive match or once every other. @davidw-valve is there some way to launch CS:GO in debug mode to help give you more output about the failure when it happens?
I usually have my setting at "5.1 Speakers", and when it breaks switching to "2 Speakers" fixes the sound, however...
I tried setting my mode to "2 Speakers" before the problem occurred and later in the match the issue happened again (again toggling my speaker mode fixed things). Some people were claiming that the issue was only happening with "5.1 Speakers", but I think that mode either just makes it more likely, or seems more likely as it's the default mode.
I have the same issue, im playing with speaker setting 2.0 and i play everyday. This occures atleast once in a day or two, sometimes even twice a day. Im on ubuntu 14.04 and 8G of ram

Conduct
There are basic rules of conduct that should be followed at all times by everyone participating in the discussions. While this is generally a relaxed environment, please remember the following:
Do not insult, harass, or demean anyone.
Do not intentionally multi-post an issue.
Do not use ALL CAPS when creating an issue report.
Do not repeatedly update an open issue remarking that the issue persists.
Remember: Just because the issue you reported was reported here does not mean that it is an issue with CS:GO. As well, should your issue not be resolved immediately, it does not mean that a resolution is not being researched or tested. Patience is always appreciated.
