Move map layer icons out of the navigation bar into the map similar to the landing pages

You probably don't want to just plop the images on the map. They are too large and take up too much space. Instead, you'd probably want to use a fly-out.

Google Maps has a great example where the current layer is displayed and on mouse over the available options show up. This would be a better experience for the user by keeping more of the map clean.
