Functionality

LifeDots is a free and open-source app for you to record and analyze your life with ease in the 8 dimensions of time, event, location, notes and photo.

Currently you can record any event by touching on an icon that you create, entering notes and attaching photos. Locations are automatically recorded (after you activate) in the background. Then you can browse your history, analyze statistics in charts, check the timeline of any event, and see your past geo locations. Further more, for easier viewing life from various perspectives, these analytic functionalities are interconnected: check timeline on any piece of a piechart, review related history about a dot on the timeline, look at geographical passages related to a period of history, and go back to related history on a dot on the map.

Photos are shrunk to the size of 500 pixels and compressed with Jpeg quality of 60, resulting of reduced size around 70KB each.

Authors and Contribution

This app is currently under development by Xilin Jia (https://github.com/XilinJia).

Any form of contribution is warmly welcome and a small guide how to help is in the wiki. I am happy to read tickets with suggestions or bug reports or even better pull requests with fixes or new features. For code contributions it would be good to have a ticket describing the changes as a place for discussion before starting to work on it. I so far work directly in the master branch as long as I am alone; For pull requests it might be worth working on a dedicated feature branch. It is good practice to use descriptive commit messages and reference tickets using #xxx, which is even suggested for TODO comments in the code. Small commits are fine and there is no need to squash multiple changes into one commit.

By submitting a pull request on github the submitter certifies the following: `Developer Certificate of Origin Version 1.9

Developer's Certificate of Origin 1.9

By making a contribution to this project, I certify that:

(a) The contribution was created in whole or in part by me and I have the right to submit it under the open source license indicated in the file; or

(b) The contribution is based upon previous work that, to the best of my knowledge, is covered under an appropriate open source license and I have the right under that license to submit that work with modifications, whether created in whole or in part by me, under the same open source license (unless I am permitted to submit under a different license), as indicated in the file; or

(c) The contribution was provided directly to me by some other person who certified (a), (b) or (c) and I have not modified it.

(d) I understand and agree that this project and the contribution are public and that a record of the contribution (including all personal information I submit with it, including my sign-off) is maintained indefinitely and may be redistributed consistent with this project or the open source license(s) involved.`

So to say submission of a pull request is considered as the act of signing this certificate. This is also why each contributor shall setup his/her development environment such that the full name and a valid email address is part of the commit meta data. Modified files shall contain an updated copyright notice to include all authors.

Status

This App has been tested for over a year with actual usage and is fully functional. The number of available languages is still very limited and it would be great if you could support translating this app on https://crowdin.com/translate/life-dots.
