Feature/work queue #180

Add a work queue option in addition to the default Async I/O.

Ignore this PR for the time being. There are to many open PRs and I can't easily get this to rebase from the current master without duplicating a commit from another branch. Once everything else gets merged I'll rebase this off the new master.
