A Tweet I saw:

“If you receive an absolutely ignorant (of the topic) & totally out of line review, is it ok to write back to the editor to say something? I don't want to argue the decision (frankly want nothing to do w/the jrnl), but I do want to say how inappropriate the review was. Yay or nay?”

Yes! We need to make it clear that authors can.
