I know that this is a large and deep topic. We can discuss different options here or open more specific issues. I opened this issue after having the need to position a set of cubes all aligned along a specific direction.

Perhaps having different grids could be easy to align objects? For example, by default a grid with a 1m square pattern, and you can move the objects 0.1m by default with keys (I start to talk about this on #57) but if you change to an special grid you can translate things in another way (I came to mind the modular grids on Illustrator http://www.creativebloq.com/illustration/create-modular-grid-system-illustrator-5132667
