10 years ago Footnotes are a foolish idea since it's introducing this whole other variable height element into the layout which will cause annoying scrolling. They should instead work by adding a number to the text of the comic and an endnote list accessible via the menu bar.

Now that things are vertically constrained, this might affect how the footnote container works. Ideally, it should take the height of the footnotes container as the edge of the box to resize on.
