currently we support tags for a post, but it would be very useful to categorize posts via a category field.

could you elaborate a bit why categories can't be solved with tags?

The main use case is when the user wants to be able to categorize (group) their posts and also tag them :) , it's not that it can't be solved with tags, but it would be much more user friendly to provide both category and tag support. most blogs support this. when migrating from big names like wordpress, some functionality would need to exist to separate normal tags from grouping tags.
