Is Mapbox the best solution? What models should we emulate?

Mapbox:

Pricing

• Depends on volume and services used
• Free tier generally covers up to 25,000 users/month
• 1-meter tileset hosting: Up to 30,000,000 “km2-days”/month

UI

• User: Highly customizable interactive maps
• Development:
  • Several ways to create including “Mapbox Studio” application
  • Requires learning some JavaScript for max customization?

Functionality

• Data upload/processing solutions
• Integration with Tableau
• Geocoding
• Street maps, land use data available
• Lots more...

Carto:

Pricing

• Tiered pricing, free up to 20,000 users/month unless we need more advanced functionality

UI

• User:

  • Similar functionality to Mapbox, with an emphasis on analytics

• Development:

  • Web-based “Carto Builder” tool
  • Some functions based on PostGIS, supports SQL commands
  • Also has a python/jupyter package, apparently able to develop in a Jupyter notebook and then publish map separately to embed in website

Functionality

• Compatible with multiple basemaps
• Built-in data analysis tools, interactive dashboards, etc.

Jupyter+Folium, ipywidgets…:

Pricing

• Free, except hosting costs as applicable

UI

• User: somewhat limited. Possible to implement filtering, other interactive features but unlikely to match speed/polish of Mapbox
• Development: Familiar (to me) geopandas/folium/jupyter

Functionality

• Broad functionality via python modules
• Hosting with acceptable performance may be a challenge

Here's what I was able to pull together, sorry it's a little late. I think Mapbox or Carto would work, but I'm not sure which of the two would be better. Looking forward to discussing more this afternoon.
