I saw this mentioned in a thread somewhere, but just came across it myself as well. I loaded a character of mine and the cur and max Mana Points were switched in the GUI. I forgot to correct them before saving, and when I loaded the game in Eschalon again, my max MP got reset down to my previous Cur level.
So, something which needs looking-into. I'll take a peek tonight.
