It looks like somewhere along the line the "straight" path smartdraw option stopped being as effective as it had been. Right now it looks like it's impossible to replicate the screenshot shown in the online docs. The toggle does make a difference, but I think I'd probably like to look into getting the original functionality back. Perhaps this should actually be three separate options.
I did a quick test and verified that this same problem was present in 0.8.1, so it's nothing recent.
