begin adding some notional unit tests to help avoid screwing things up as I change things
support writing to a BytesIO 'file'

I certainly don't mind continuing to merge requests, btw, but I'd honestly be happy to just give you push access directly into this repo, if you like. Let me know if you'd prefer that!

That sounds great though I might still submit PRs for some of the risker or more substantive changes (i.e. argparse)
