Are you 100% sure there's no point keeping this? Don't know much about Gentoo internals...
Basically I would prefer keeping all AIF-related files within the project and therefore in a single tarball. If we can keep the accidental patches' turnaround time relatively short then I think it is the most ceonvenient choice (for packagers and users alike). If the patch and release turnaround time is somewhat longer (as it seems to be around now) it might be wiser to maintain the Gentoo-specific parts (like the OpenRC initscript) separately so the reaction time to any OpenRC-related changes can still be short for Gentoo users. Removing it from AIF source won't affect Gentoo users as their pieces is already in a patchset over the source code, and at least one user noted it on the mailing list that this solution would be less confusing than the current situation. As far as I'm concerned, I would be happy to help with maintenance either way :) So, all in all, I think it really should be your choice, @arnova, as you know all the plans and aspects around AIF :) The bottom line is that it might be wise to avoid maintaining the same functionality in two places.
Well since you're the Gentoo maintainer, it's up to you then. I think it makes sense not to maintain this stuff in two places. Unless @abelbeck objects?
I have no objections.

Gentoo-specific additions are now included and maintained in Gentoo's portage tree.
