Here’s what I have found on CiviCRM 5.36, no default payment processor, stripe and GC enabled.

When set to “Always send receipt “: 1 copy of receipt for initial payment and 2x receipt is sent for subsequent payments.

When set to “Defer to is_email_receipt”: No receipt is sent at all, initial or subsequent although “send email receipt is on”.

Also contribution source is not populated anymore. @artfulrobot
