If the OWL_* related directories like $HOME/src and others not exist owl fail.
I think that a normal (moi) user want use owl whitowt touching the variables but fr that I need touch them (not the script, the variables)
why not set a fallback ditectory in case that either the vars arenot set or the dirs not exist
anyway makepkg have variables fr store packages, buildirectory, and other, why not let Owl use them intead and fallback to owl ones if there rennot set and fallback to aother directory (in /tmp or creating by theyself) if these arennot proessent or not exist or are inascessibles
