An important point we were discussing is forfeit management. Imagine playing a HIS game for 9 hours (or over 3 months), and then one of the players forfeits, preventing you from completing the game. Having an option to substitute continue the game would be crucial
"BGA has no policy or capability of effectively handling games of this length and weight, in my opinion, unless you're able to somehow have an external group etc. to schedule and play games with."
so we have to come up with solutions ourselfs:
Note:
No actual work will be done on this issue, until it is possible to play the game properly. This issue is purely for preserving a discussion we had on this/providing a place for posting addition thoughs/ideas on this.
Possible solutions:
let AI take over their faction
Pro: easy to implement. (just spend all their CP reinforcing their keys, or whatever the protestant/Papacy is doing)., would be inline with how other games handle player dropout.
Con: will probably be a kingmaker, making the remaining experience bad for everyone.
Let another player take over:
Pro: that player has an understanding of the current game state, and can continue playing normally. Implementation should be almost the same as the 3-5 player varieants (natural allies being played by the same player)
Con: may be a kingmaker for that player.
Have a 7th player (moderator) that will take over when a player leaves:
Pro: No kingmaker (at least not more than normal)
Con: would screw up BGA win/ELO statistics, dont know if/how it would be possible to have a player select being the moderator during matchmaking.
Ditch BGA for another online Bordgame framework that supports a new player taking over (e.g. http://test.saito.io/arcade):
Pro: Players leaving would not be our problem anymore.
Con: All other platforms have a far lowe reach than BGA, and I would heavely dislike having to switch platforms for HIS. And BGA's matchmaking and other features are quite good, faverd by Ed beach (according to John)
I personally favor to AI or let their natural ally take over solution, but were months away of having to decide on anything in this matter.
