@ceholden any interest on doing a python session? We really have to do a Python session before you leave...

I'd be happy to, but early- to mid-November is going to be pretty bad timing for me.

I was thinking of a general tour to the Python and the scientific Python ecosystem. For instance,

• Why Python?
  • User communities overview, emphasis on "one language for your entire workflow" aspect that I like so much (one language to fetch data, clean data, interactive, algorithm development, and viz via plots or web, versus something like R that is weak at some of the ends of this workflow)
• Installation via conda
• Brief intro to Jupyter notebook (leave advanced stuff to the Jupyter lesson)
• Overview of Python
• Package ecosystem
  • numpy: base data type, including n-dimensional arrays
  • pandas: table-based data
  • matplotlib: very short "hey this is what you'd use for plotting"
  • scikit-learn: machine learning
  • If time,
  • Easy command line interface programs via click -- ties into reproducible research by externalizing workflow parameterization so you can use Bash + configuration files (no hard coding!)
  • rasterio: Pythonic raster data library based on GDAL
  • fiona: Pythonic vector data library based on GDAL

Updating this to a brief introduction on makefiles with some time to hack around with them too.
