How to link a technique documented in the production of an object to an actor? #75
It has been decided by the Semantic Committee, on 15/07/2021, that techniques should be documented at two levels:
At the object level, linked to the production event
At the actor level, when techniques are not linked to a specific object
Therefore, techniques that have been employed during the production of an object are not directly linked to a specific actor. This is not an issue when only one actor is involved in the production of an object.
However, this can be problematic when multiple actors are involved in the production of an object because there is no indication of who used which technique. For example, the group Wm. Notman and son with the person Eugène l'Africain produced, together, a painted photograph n°M2000.21.7.29, that has been produced with the techniques "Painted", "Composite photograph" and "Albumen print".
As we can see in the diagram, there is no link between the actors and the techniques used in the production of the object. Therefore, it is impossible to know if the technique "Albumen print" has been used by Wm. Notman and son or by Eugène l'Africain. Some hypotheses can be made according to the roles of each actor in the production event, but only humans can interpret this information.
The first question is:
Is it useful to link the technique used in the production to the actor involved in this production event?
If the answer is yes, how to create those links? 3 options have been envisioned yet:
Link the actor to the technique with the property P2_has_type, similarly to techniques that are not associated with objects
Link the technique to the instance of PC14_carried_out_by. Because PC classes are not subclasses of E1_CRM_Entity, no CIDOC CRM property can be used. Are there other properties that we could use?
Create sub-events in the production of the object, one sub-event for each actor involved in the production of the object. In the case of Wm. Notman and son and Eugène l'Africain, there would be 2 sub-event of the production event, one for the involvement of Wm. Notman and son and another one for the involvement of Eugène l'Africain.
