This is what happens at the default zoom level if you click right under "Austin." It doesn't become decipherable until you zoom way out. Also, the tooltip still references hexagons.

I feel like either the default zoom needs to be adjusted or a different visualization strategy deployed.

Thanks for taking a screen grab and pointing this out. We'd really like to find a better hexbin sizing, we just haven't had the bandwidth to prioritize after privacy concerns were raised.

Alternatively, we could set the default dates to be a smaller range too.

From avickers on 2019-07-08:

Yes, a default duration of a month would probably resolve it!

A dynamic approach might be to take the sum of all the bins and then calibrate the height scale to be (Σ / 10000) trips per meter. In other words, each map would consist of 10,000 meters spread across it proportionally, and each meter would represent 0.01% of total trips. (Adjust the number 10,000 as needed.)

The idea is the map heights would represent proportional variation rather than absolute numbers of trips, which are communicated textually.

Maybe this could kick in only after Σ crossed some threshold, and the fixed 5 trips / meter would be the default below that.

Anyway, I appreciate the work that you guys are doing on this!
