A web app to display an interactive map that shows information about the various native flora growing on the UWA campus. The map is open for all to access but the main focus is mainly the FoGUWA community.

The University of Western Australia’s gardens are listed on the National Estate, and are registered with the Australian Heritage Commission. The Friends of the Grounds UWA was established with the objective of encouraging the UWA, and wider WA community to take an active interest in the grounds via events, publications, lectures, and projects related to the university grounds.
FoGUWA have recruited Coders for Causes to create a map-based application, which will allow users to actively track their location, and that of the plant species on the grounds. The application will allow users to click on specific clusterings of plant species in areas for more information on the plant via the Kwongan Foundation’s Facebook page. The primary contact for FoGUWA is Senior Honorary Research Fellow, Emeritus Professor Hans Lambers, a highly cited, and influential biological sciences doctor.
The project will expose developers to Progressive Web Applications (PWAs), a design system which allows developers to subvert the Android, and iOS app stores (if you’d like) in creating an application, whilst making it compatible on all devices.
During the winter, we hope to complete phase 1 by July 22nd. In phase 1, the scope for the project will be to:
During the summer, to make it easier for the client to modify the data on the website, the following will need to be completed:
The scope may be increased later down the line.
Contributions to the codebase are managed using the Gitflow Workflow. A detailed overview of this can be found here.
To commit to a branch in this repository, use the command yarn cz
or git commit
. You will be forced to follow the format that commitizen provides.
Once run, you will be prompted to fill the required fields which then gives your commit messages a structured format. For more information on this, visit Commitizen's GitHub page here.
There are four (5) types of branch names used in the project:
feature/ - used for working on new features. (will be most used)
test/ - used for fixing/adding tests.
bugfix/ - used for fixing bugs that come up.
hotfix/ - used for fixing an urgent bug on master, that have a high impact.
chore/ - used for updating menial tasks such as README's, yarn.lock etc.
Example: If I (Jeremiah Pinto) were creating a
feature
branch, the naming convention would befeature/jp-<feature-name>
. Notice that I have my initials in the branch names. This helps us in the long run identify the branch and feature that is being worked on.
You should always create your branch from the master
branch.
When your feature branch is ready to be merged back into master
, a pull request (PR) must be submitted.
Automatic deployments will be added to the branch in the future so you can see your code live. Please make sure all test cases are passing before submitting a PR.

Do not confuse yourself with Nuxt and Vue. While Nuxt is built on top of Vue, there are a few features that Nuxt provides that are not available in Vue.
For the maps, the major mapping-software to display on the web are:
For the Back-end, a good resource to learn how to use NodeJS, ExpressJS and MongoDB: MDN Web Docs
For the Front-end, I would suggest how to use VueJS first before moving onto NuxtJS as you will find more resources there. The VueJS documentation is pretty helpful for this.
