Platform fixes #23

This is a start for #19 and fixes the cli for Linux (and probably Mac). It needs to be tested on mac, checked for regressions on windows and in the installer code, and doesn't yet address any platform issues in the gui.

There is quite a bit of rework needed in the general save/load structure, so I'm going to merge this now to have at least a functional base to mod from (I've kicked the tyres and it seems fine, but not had a chance to properly smoke it).
