This would not get rid of such effects. Any tendency to gaze at one picture more than others would still be latent, and would contaminate measurements after the requirement to tap the centre was removed. It is probably better to explicitly measure such effects and to control for them statistically.
Is it possible to have a neutral gaze condition, where participants would tap on the centre of the screen (fixation cross/dot) before receiving visual and auditory stimulation which would come more or less simultaneously (1-2.5s delay). This together with statistical estimation and perhaps minimizing number of trials would reduce anticipatory baseline effects. (Barr, 2011; Spivey, 2005)
