Moving Pictures is a movies plug-in for the MediaPortal media center application. The goal of the plug-in is to create a very focused and refined experience that requires minimal user interaction. The plug-in emphasizes usability and ease of use in managing a movie collection consisting of ripped DVDs, and movies reencoded in common video formats supported by MediaPortal.

Support a full release date rather than just year #551

Suggestion that another sorting field be added to the MP Plugin.

Rather than the confusion given by the sort by date (previously discussed
in issue 333) with the modified/created windows dates.

I am suggesting that the new field grab the release date from IMDB and then
we can sort our movies when they were released, this may assist many users.

Well the release date is already partially stored as the "year", so you could
sort by
this. There is no reason we couldn't modify this to store the full release date
(including day and month) instead though.

As long as that is not complicating the issue to much. I live in Australia, and
would be just happy to have the USA release date as my sorting option. As long
as it
can be sorted by the release date.. I am happy to have the constant USA release
date.

Most likely we will just let the scraper script decide which date to use.
Perhaps in
the future we will add an enhancement so Moving Pictures will pass the current
country
to the scraper script so it can use this information to decide what to pull.

Hi John, I was wondering if any consideration may be given to moving this one
forward
a bit?

I have been adding a both a mix of new movies and old (ones I have missed over
the
years) to my collection.

It is getting a bit painful when I want them to be sorted by there release date
and
the only way is to modify the date physically with a program so that it shows
up in
the right order...

I understnad it is not a great issue for most people, but, if you have any time
it
would be appreciated.

Thanks, Spaldo

Scheduled it for our next enhancement release as low priority. No promises, but
this is
a pretty minor change so will try to get it in.

If you would like me to test this at any time let me know John.. I always have
to go
in and change my windows file stamp when adding older movies into my
collection, so
it gets a bit frustrating :)

Great news John, can't wait for this... will make things so much easier than
having to change the windows time/date stamp everytime I add a old movie to my
collection !

Any luck with this one? It would be so much easier to not modify every movie's
windows time stamp

Its still planned its just not top priority right now. Sorry. :( I have raised
the priority here on the tracker though so it should get more attention (which
in turn could mean sooner implementation).

Thanks John... I appreciate it... At the moment, for me, Moving Pictures will
pretty much be near perfect with this option.

I understand that most people may not need this feature, but, for those with a
collection building like mine (older movies) and do not want them at the top of
the list, the will REALLY appreciate this feature.

Thank you for your efforts and the attention you pay to the people who love
your product

Hey apondman,

Nice to hear from you. I know you do a lot of work on the project and we
appreciate it.

Unfortunately, yes, this is still an issue and we cannot sort the movies by
release date :(

If you are really considering fixing the issue, then I will also consider
naming my first child after you...

Thanks again, Spaldo

I think as long as a new DBMovieInfo field is added 'ReleaseDate' then im happy.

From both a user perspective and someone that uses the API (via the Trakt
plugin) I expect Year to be a 'Year' and not a date.

Original comment by damien.haynes@gmail.com on 23 Apr 2013 at 7:14

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
TheMovieDbAPI already supports release date, in fact we currently parse the
date to get the Year so its an easy change there.

r1509 and r1508 to be precise just needs a quick code review and verification
that it works (it does on my machine). Translations can be solved in an
alternate way if you would rather see the names of the month as a translation
key.

It will be worth looking at the dynamic category for Release Date. If we decide
to keep it then we need to prettify the nodes generated. What do you think?

I have raised Issue 1138, an enhancement to remove the 'Time' component from
Date of Release. It serves no purpose to the user.

This will also deal with my comment #41.

@elspaldo, as far as Im aware 'ReleaseDate' sorting already exists. Check the
