make "unchecked" checkbox visible in Filter area #24

either as an "X" or as an empty checkbox

one option is to remove all styles, but then the check box looks ugly (CSS doesn't work the same in all browsers on checkboxes) instead I inserted unicode representations for empty and full, which at least will use the proper text color. We can replace them with images at some point
