Daily Focus Time Slot Timings for Focus Hub #55

Closed ghost closed 7 years ago

ghost commented 7 years ago

In the original QS proposal there were several sessions of lengthy focus time...

Original proposal from @nelsonic was: 07:00 AM - 10:00 AM 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM 02:00 PM - 4:00 PM 4.30 PM - 6:30 PM 9:00 PM - 11:00 PM

After watching the video @nelsonic posted here: https://github.com/dwyl/focushub/issues/48

Mark iterated the sessions to a rhythm of alternating slots per day, as the theory suggests:

Current proposal from @markwilliamfirth is: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

However @iteles has raised concerns that the 4 1-hour slots might not be achievable given how people take lunch at different times. This could be tackled by enforcing a lunch break time of 1pm-2pm. @markwilliamfirth also agrees that 4 slots may be difficult to enforce and that one morning and one evening slot might be better. @iteles is also in favour of lengthening timeslots to 1h30, but @markwilliamfirth thinks 1h is better to market them as "Power Hours" and because research shows people new to deep work can only hold concentration for up to one hour.

@iteles new suggestion is: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM 03:00 PM - 04:30 PM

Currently I am most in favour of:

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

or

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

We need to decide how to structure the quiet hours. @nelsonic @iteles can we discuss here?

nelsonic commented 7 years ago

@markwilliamfirth no objection to these times. keen to have something agreed and adhered to by everyone so we can start focus(ing) πŸ‘

@markwilliamfirth Thanks for opening the issue!

I love the concept of 'power hours' for marketing them <3

Although I think the first option (4 slots) would be ideal, I don't think 12h00-13h00 is realistic as 12h00 - 13h30 is usually the time slot in which most people go for lunch. Maybe we could do 3 slots instead of 4?

Oh, we can add an 08h00-09h00 timeslot in there instead of 12h00 - 13h00 in case people are in and still adhere to the Deep Work 4 hours a day and encourage early bird focus and avoid the 09h00-11h00 timeslot when people are arriving!

Ok, so the proposal above is: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

There's only two problems with this:

  1. It isn't rhythmic
  2. The office isn't 24/7 access until 1-month in.

What about (2h): 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Or even (3h): 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Or even (4h): 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM

This means there is a rhythmic 2/3/4h gap between each focus session. 2h gap seems most appropriate?

Also I think we should review the 24/7 access policy (following our discussion today) so that providing a reference and ID is supplied then 24/7 access is possible for everyone

@iteles ?

@iteles The only remaining problem with

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Is that it encourages a 9h+ working day - is this something we want to encourage?

Whereas

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

encourages a 6/7/8 hour day

ghost commented 7 years ago

Another question is whether we want to implement this every day of the week, or only on certain days - 'Deep Work Wednesdays'?

iteles commented 7 years ago

Every day of the week, with whatever spacing you desire. We'll have big laminated signs with the times on the wall (and I love your thinking around having it up on the monitor too!) so I don't think uneven spacing is that much of an issue, but whatever your preference is! Most people won't be there for the whole day anyway (not many in at 8 for example).

ghost commented 7 years ago

@iteles in that case I think we should progress with enforcing

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

in the first instance

and seeing how people respond, and later expanding the hours as necessary

nelsonic commented 7 years ago

This isn't done. People still make a lot of noise when ever they please. Loud conversations, noisy walking and general noise are very much still going on in these times. We need signs printed and posted on walls. We need all existing members of FH to not only be aware of the "focus times", they need to agree to it and abide by it.

@nelsonic this issue only refers to choosing the hours/timeslots. It has been closed as it has been completed.

The tasks you mention in your post refer to different issues such as: #57 #36 #40 #26 #30 #17
