Many people have been kind enough to share their map templates - Add them to a UI to allow people to start from an island that most closely resembles their island

@ipv6freely if you want to have your exact starting map, you can use the new upload screenshot feature to trace over your map. These templates will be helpful for people who don't want to take the time to trace over their map. I can also see the template UI eventually being a place to showcase islands that people can use as inspiration or a starting point

What do you think of trying to create some image scanning tool that can basically parse the screenshot of the map from in game and construct the metadata from that?

it's not great but I was able to extract most of it from an in game screenshot. Not sure how this would translate to the data structure used by the site though.

Here is my map, it might be type F1 but somehow has some differences. I think this is an issue, that our maps don't belong to any of 24 maps.

@eugeneration I wrote a simple console app that uses a naive color averaging approach.

1. I cropped the screenshot to only the map (x: 266, y: 89, width: 448, height: 384)
2. I resized the image down using High Quality Bilinear bitmap resizing,
3. check each pixel against the "known" color that represents the feature using a vector difference, and a defined tolerance and record the feature it matches
4. set the pixel to my defined debug color for easy visualization
5. resize the image back up again just for easy visualization

@eugeneration Darn! Now that you mention it, it does seem I traced on a picture I took after terraforming. It was the oldest picture I had but it wasn’t old enough. 😔

Interestingly, the rocks and beaches I have don’t match exactly with E2, and those can’t be terraformed. 🤔

Has it been confirmed by data miners that there’s a standard set of maps and that they aren’t procedurally generated?

Hi! I am the Owner of all the map data in the images for requests :) I would have loved if you reached out to me as I have all the map images and variations of each of the maps, and I was wondering why I started receiving requests with altered images and number variants not according to my own data. Before using my map data please reach out to me next time instead of asking people to recreate the maps based on my photos.

Your work also helped as evidence that there doesn't seem to be a fixed set of beaches but each island seems to have a randomly generated beach based on a fixed set of beach tiles. I was very impressed by the data and how much effort must have gone into collecting them all and my intent was certainly not to just claim the work as my own. I still haven't yet built a credits page in the app itself, but I do have your name down in my running list of credits on the discord.

First off, I appreciate that you want to credit me (though I can see in the discord I am not credited) However my main issue stemmed from individuals contacting me demanding maps based on your altering of my images, and being irritated that I was not providing them "grid" photos for reference as you took my map data and referenced it for your own use.

I understand the want to create templates for users to be able to design their islands around, however the data I provided was not meant to be taken without asking, nor was it to open the door to people harassing me about incorrect information in which you labelled my images.

Part of the reason I did not apply the "abc, 123" to my images was because I have around one thousand pictures that I screen shotted from my own game, and encountered at least 14 different types for each of the 95 river layouts (close to 1300 images).

The River, Land mass and Resident Services do not change per each unique river layout, and had you actually read my reddit post that you stole the images from, you would have seen that it is nearly impossible to create individualized templates.

The beach shapes, airports, river exits, pier locations, rock formations, peninsulas, secret beach locations all vary at the time of creation for each map, which I also explained in my post.

Moving forward, I would hope you realized that it is not okay to take someones information without permission or reaching out to them first, as my data was unique to my game and experiences.

I provided these maps to help people reference their islands so they could see the variety of map choices and you have now taken that from me to have people demanding I provide them higher res images so they can recreate maps that are not their own.

I hope you can see where my irritation has stemmed from, and that you completely devalued the time and effort I spent into collection and organizing that data. You altered my images and gave them classification that is now being spread amongst people and I do not appreciate that.

Had you actually approached me first and requested permission to use my data, we would be having an entirely different conversation. I am not giving you permission currently, and would ask that you remove the images you altered with my work. If you would like to keep continuing referencing my work, I ask that you contact me at my email that is on the images you stole, or reply to me in your discord as I have reached out there as well.

Hey I totally understand where you are coming from and the frustrations you faced due to my not asking for permission. (I also responded to your message on Discord). Again, I'm very sorry for this and am grateful that you brought this to my attention.

I have deleted what I believe to be every instance of your image on both Github and Discord. Please let me know if there's anything else/anything you find that I should remove. I want to make sure I'm doing everything possible to fix this situation. Thank you gain for bringing this to my attention and am taking this as a lesson to ask for permission before using other people's work.
