We need a 'cool' (and pronounceable) name for the open source functions project. The name could be anything so feel free to brainstorm. Add your ideas as comments on this issue.

Maybe EFS (enterprise functions service), pronounced as Efes (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephesus).

"fn" is just so fn awesome. it's a verb, it's a noun, it's a participle. i think if we said it right people would even go so far as to call it (phonetic) "effin" instead of saying "functions". imaginary convo:

me: have you used "effin" from oracle?

newb: no. what is "effin" ?

me: oh ya know it's like oracle's "functions"

newb: oh cool but very dicey name

do it live!

On the molecule/atomic train, reactor. I know there's a few projects out there with that name, but it's still kinda cool.

"gru" is master of minions

alternatively, "nefario" is master of minions in his own way

@rdallman love fn. I do not want to get rid of that as our CLI. hopefully that works in.

@derekschultz like where you're going with neuro path. Axon, synapse, or neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine.

I'm also with @rdallman. I like the idea of an FN related name. It's awesomely minimal! If we claim FN is an acronym for "Function " what would N be? Nexus, Network, Neuron (@derekschultz)

Or come up with meanings for variants like EFN, EFFN that are still pronounced "effen"?

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @treeder on Jun 21, 2017, 11:54

I'm down with fn, it's sort of what we call it now anyways. Doesn't have to be an acronym though, fn is an abbreviation for function (look at your keyboard).

But if it were an acronym, it could be a recursive acronym like gnu, which would be cool.

fn = "fn's not functions" :)

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @ssmith on Jun 21, 2017, 12:00

@treeder So if the project were simply FN then fn.io would be the ideal domain name but there's a squatter who owns it. We need someone who's not traceable to Oracle to contact the owner to get the price.

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @treeder on Jun 26, 2017, 11:29

I'm kind of going back on using fn as a name. It's just not that cool of a name, if you put yourself in an outsider's shoes that just heard about it.

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @hibooboo2 on Jun 26, 2017, 11:31

And most cli names and projects name are not cool until value is put on it like kubernetes google....

All made up and were not cool...

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @hibooboo2 on Jun 26, 2017, 11:32

What makes the name cool is the product and marketing not the name itself... IMO

Hey how about we bring back the OG name.... Titan .. short for titanium, also this:

"members of the second generation of divine beings, descending from the primordial deities and preceding the Olympian deities"

Also it's not really used in any tech projects other than tiny/dead stuff.

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @ssmith on Jun 26, 2017, 13:06

I like titanium over Titan. Titanium has low density, and high strength!!

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @carimura on Jun 26, 2017, 13:08

titan is short for that. titanium is cool but harder to spell, say, type, etc. also it's 4 syllables. death to any great name. anything google-driven notwithstanding.

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @treeder on Jun 26, 2017, 13:13

The Titans were effectively the first gods - the twelve children of Gaia and Uranus, the representations of the earth and the sky respectively. They ruled in a mythic prehistoric age until being overthrown by Zeus, a son of two of the Titans (Cronus and

Carbon is kinda cool too. " fourth most abundant element in the universe by mass after hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. Second most abundant element in the human body by mass (about 18.5%) after oxygen."

it's some programming APi for apple. different though.

- Carbon Platform
- Carbon Engine
- Carbons
- Carbon Chaining
- CarbonHub
- Elements

- Titan Functions
- Titan Platform
- Titans
- Titan Chaining
- TitanHub
- Marketplace of the Gods. :)

Reactor is cool but it's a Spring framework thing already.. pretty close to home. Could do Reaction, Reactive (no can't do that... reactive is Lightbends thing).

Fn is cool. I'm a little on the fence about the 2 letter thing. Feels like an acronym not a name. And super short.

Titan is pretty awesome but the negative part is it implies big. mega. that's like, the opposite of small, fast, nimble.

Carbon is pretty neat. CarbonFn?

Themes: atomic, brain/neuro, space, metals....

... what else we got going?

Cobalt is the element in the periodic table after Iron.

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @carimura on Jun 26, 2017, 14:08

thought about that. Immediately reminded me of Cobalt Networks and awesome blue servers. but maybe the Function-kiddies these days won't remember Cobalt.

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @treeder on Jun 26, 2017, 14:12

Oooh, I like Cobalt. Those servers rocked.

Cobalt is a chemical element with symbol Co and atomic number 27. Like nickel, cobalt is found in the Earth's crust only in chemically combined form, save for small deposits found in alloys of natural meteoric iron.

it's a boat, it's a server, it's a serverless platform!

rdallman commented 7 years ago

In gitlab by @ssmith on Jun 26, 2017, 14:19

All the elements have been used for something already but I guess the problem is that they are frequently used for project/frameworks. OpenWhisk is a weird name but at least it's unique. I think we need to think out of the box more?

Maybe something related to @derekschultz's neurophysiology line of thinking? The Mylin project is an intensional misspelling of Myelin, the insulation around nerves. We could misspell something we like but is taken?

Cobalt. Kobalt. hmmm. The C is "cooler" looking to me.

Ya I do love the neuro angle but can't find anything I like. Axon, Synapse, Synaptic....
