Revisit smarter language switching (Icelandic and English) #5

Currently we don't use Babel or Polylang to deal with our multilanguage support. This is to avoid the hard-to-debug \ML macro issues from the previous template. The areas to consider: titles, abstracts, keywords, citation formats

mkyas commented 2 years ago

There is also polyglossia, which is a xetex/lualex version of babel. Sadly, the package to use for language support depends a lot on the driver that we use. Depending on the document, students may want to use lualatex (allows the automatic layout of state-machines in tikz). Others may use pdflatex. Do we have dinosaurs that use latex followed by dvipdf?

foleyj2 commented 2 years ago

I don't think anyone uses the traditional latex toolchain anymore. pdflatex is most common. If we pick a Overleaf-compatible toolchain and make sure it is clear, it will work. To be truely compatible with the (MSWord focused) Engineering MSc fonts, it is easiest to use XeLaTeX anyway.

There is always a lot of work in getting stuff to work with pdflatex, xelatex, and lualatex at the same time. Some features of tikz are only supported on lualatex, which makes the problem at least interesting to solve.

foleyj2 commented 2 years ago

What features? I've used tikz mostly on pdflatex.

mkyas commented 2 years ago

SVG export, automatic node positioning, the layered layout of the graph drawing library, tree layout, Many parts of tikz are implemented in C/C++ now, and the interface uses lua in lualatex to interface.

Sounds like I should take a look at luatex.

While trying to help a student, we discovered that the IS option to the ruthesis package is the current way to set Icelandic as the main language.
