Brother Drivers (T83) #212

The drivers are available from Brother - as either RPM or DEB. While RPM Solus trickery can allow an install of sorts - no print no facs. Result as complaints of no cupswrapper and permissions difficulties with Cups itself. Additionally, Scanner detection does not happen correctly. All-in-all, a fail. Specifically, the driver(s) being requested are for Brother MFC-L2703DW, and Brother describes these as MFC-L2700 series. This printer is mass-market in Australia, sold through the largest office supply chain, so they're not at all rare. The drivers appear to be generic monochrome MFC Laser printers in the brother range. Brother website specifies differing procedures pre-install, depending on the relevant Linux install. Solus is 'different'. Not a waste of time unless I'm making packages for printers people aren't going to use in Solus (and with experience it becomes fast to make them). Try this out `sudo eopkg install https://packages.solus-project.com/unstable/b/brother-hll2315dw/brother-hll2315dw-3.2.1-1-1-x86_64.eopkg`

Yes, you must be getting good at this SF! My sequence for anyone reading: 1) Installed via terminal sudo eopkg install home/downloads/blah. closed terminal. 2) deleted failed printer from printer settings. then closed print settings. 3) connected usb cable (no wifi for me) and turned printer on. 4)re-opened and unlocked print settings. pressed 'add printer.' Solus saw the printer. Since the eopkg was installed already, print settings defaulted to the driver Sunny packaged for me. 5) re-opened terminal and used IP command to find printer IP address 6) get rid of "local host" as destination and cut and paste your printer IP address in print settings destination box 7) no Solus re-boot. Printed from a pdf doc and went to town. Works fantastic. Productivity restored. Thank you so much, and if you hadn't heard it lately, thanks for the hard work you do on behalf of the entire solus community.

Hello, I'm using 2 Brother printers: DCP-7010 and MFC-L9550CDW I managed to get MFC-L9550CDW working by following this procedure https://solus-project.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12044 - it prints fine, only via USB though. Output for `lsusb`: ``` Bus 003 Device 005: ID 04f9:0314 Brother Industries, Ltd MFC-L9550CDW ``` But the same procedure did not work for the DCP-7010. To make the scanner work I had to install it separately: >>! In T6347#115950, #sunnyflunk wrote: > The scanner is combined for all models (well all recent models) > > `sudo eopkg install https://packages.solus-project.com/unstable/b/brscan4/brscan4-0.4.4_4-1-1-x86_64.eopkg` And it works fine (e.g. with simple scan). Is this the way to go or would it be better to ask directly for the "regular" driver package? Did anyone manage to get a Brother printer work through wi-fi? And could you provide a DCP-7010 package? Thanks very much in advance!

Can I clarify what is required? The printer and scanner drivers are separate, but the scanner drivers work with 373 different models (i.e. the same package for models made in the previous X years). The printer drivers are specific to each model.

Yes I confirm that the generic scanner driver ( brscan4-0.4.4_4-1-1-x86_64.eopkg ) works fine with MFC-L9550CDW. And I understand now how driver and printer packages are anyways separate. Thanks for clarifying. Then I guess I just need the DCP-7010 printer driver, if you manage to find it it would be greatly appreciated. Big thanks for your work :]

I expect the relevant line to be something like: `ID 04f9:0182 Brother Industries, Ltd`

Output from `lsusb` is indeed `Bus 003 Device 002: ID 04f9:0182 Brother Industries, Ltd DCP-7010` However after removing the printer from printer configuration and installing the driver you provided I still can't get it to work. Below the output. Could it be linked to the failed update of clr-boot-manager? When I look for it in Add printer, it shows as "CUPS-BRF-Printer", and I manually have to look for the correct driver (DCP-7010 for CUPS), is this normal behavior? Also I find it strange that the URI is `cups-brf:/` for my other (working) printer it is `usb://Brother/MFC-L9550CDW?serial=E73493J4J167939`. What am I doing wrong? ``` $ sudo eopkg install https://packages.solus-project.com/unstable/b/brother-dcp7010/brother-dcp7010-2.0.1-1-1-x86_64.eopkg Mot de passe :  brother-dcp7010-2.0.1-1-1-x86_64.eopkg [en cache] Ordre d'installation : brother-dcp7010 brother-dcp7010-2.0.1-1-1-x86_64.eopkg [en cache] Installation de brother-dcp7010, version 2.0.1, millésime 1 Extraction des fichiers de brother-dcp7010 brother-dcp7010 installé [✓] Syncing filesystems success [✓] Updating dynamic library cache success [✗] Updating clr-boot-manager failed A copy of the command output follows: [FATAL] cbm (src/bootman/kernel.c:L629): Failed to install kernel /boot/EFI/com.solus-project/kernel-com.solus-project.lts.4.9.102-91: No space left on device [FATAL] cbm (src/bootman/update.c:L329): Failed to install default-lts kernel: ///usr/lib/kernel/com.solus-project.lts.4.9.102-91 Possible filedescriptor leak : 3 (/run/lock/subsys/pisi) Possible filedescriptor leak : 4 (/var/log/eopkg.log) Possible filedescriptor leak : 5 (/var/cache/eopkg/packages/brother-dcp7010-2.0.1-1-1-x86_64.eopkg) [✗] Updating clr-boot-manager failed A copy of the command output follows: [FATAL] cbm (src/bootman/kernel.c:L629): Failed to install kernel /boot/EFI/com.solus-project/kernel-com.solus-project.lts.4.9.102-91: No space left on device [FATAL] cbm (src/bootman/update.c:L329): Failed to install default-lts kernel: ///usr/lib/kernel/com.solus-project.lts.4.9.102-91 Possible filedescriptor leak : 3 (/run/lock/subsys/pisi) Possible filedescriptor leak : 4 (/var/log/eopkg.log) Possible filedescriptor leak : 5 (/var/cache/eopkg/packages/brother-dcp7010-2.0.1-1-1-x86_64.eopkg) Possible filedescriptor leak : 6 (/var/log/usysconf.rewind.log (deleted)) ```

(and should be attended to) Judging by the udev rules, the scanner is overriding the printer permissions. Try this: (it is all one line) ``` echo 'ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0182", MODE="0666", GROUP="lp", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/99-dcp7010.rules ``` Then reboot so I don't have to look up the command to reload the rules xD

#temp1ar can you download https://drive.google.com/open?id=1h4ptr48o8RrDfp9Q4980mumiEr3-3IkM and install it and tell me if your printer works and please the `lsusb` output? For scanner support you can install the `brscan4` package

#temp1ar add `--ignore-dependency` to the install command You will then need to install packages manually `sudo eopkg install a2ps ghostscript`

#sunnyflunk thanks! Installed the package and setup the printer twice - both wifi and usb. In both cases I get Printing, then Printing completed nearly immediately but no response from printer. lsusb output: Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. #Girtablulu Sorry, didn't realize brscan4 was a repo package. Installed it and scanning works both wirelessly and via usb.

#temp1ar So the scanner works but printing doesn't ? Have you removed your printer you had installed/added before installing the package and added the printer manually?
celticmagic commented 10 months ago
Nuno Santos (#temp1ar), 2018-08-21 12:26:47 UTC

#Girtablulu I did. Did it again now. Even rebooted after removing the printers. Installed them again and I can see one as usb://Brother/DCP-1610W%20series?serial=E74230J4N259615 and the other one as dnssd://Brother%20DCP-1610W%20series._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/?uuid=e3248000-80ce-11db-8000-38b1dbaa69af. Tried printing a test page and a self-test page from the print settings and a page from gedit, in both wireless and usb print setups. I see the status briefly change to Processing in the Printers window and get the notifications that it's printing and that printing is complete. But nothing happens in the printer itself.

Please run `sudo eopkg install a2ps glibc-32bit ghostscript psutils` these are the needed rundeps for the package and test it again, sorry for the issues :)

#temp1ar Make sure you have all these installed (I didn't list all of them). `sudo eopkg install a2ps glibc-32bit ghostscript psutils`

Just bought a Brother HL-L2375DW printer and would like to ask for inclusion of the driver into Solus OS.

#Girtablulu I have downloaded and installed it. It installs fine and I can setup the printer in cups but printing fails with following error Idle - "File "/usr/lib/cups/filter/brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2375DW" not available: No such file or directory"
celticmagic commented 10 months ago
Peter O'Connor (#sunnyflunk), 2018-10-11 04:18:49 UTC

#Girtablulu a lesson for you, the `egrep -nir` lines are fairly important to find key information (such as proper file names). For example: ``` $ egrep -nir lpdwrapper opt/brother/Printers/HLL2375DW/cupswrapper/paperconfigml2:248: if ( $_ =~ /\*cupsFilter:.*_lpdwrapper_/){ opt/brother/Printers/HLL2375DW/cupswrapper/brother-HLL2375DW-cups-en.ppd:25:*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2375DW" opt/brother/Printers/HLL2375DW/cupswrapper/brother-HLL2375DW-cups-en.ppd:26:*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-pdf 0 brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2375DW" ``` Indicates the cupswrapper should indeed be symlinked to `brother_lpdwrapper_HLL2375DW` in the filter directory. I also advise removing the `lpdfilter` symlink as it shouldn't be needed (it's called from a path relative to lpdwrapper). If it's a generic name then either, it should be symlinked to a different name, or not symlinked at all (I think they even recognise file conflicts are bad).

#sunnyflunk oh thanks for that info didn't know this #afettouhi https://drive.google.com/open?id=14bz5Rao92ULfFk62682J5EZ9XDnarOC8 can you try again?
celticmagic commented 10 months ago
André Fettouhi (#afettouhi), 2018-10-11 14:51:23 UTC

#Girtablulu tried it again with the new driver. No error this time cups says that printing completed succesfully but nothing is printing. I tried printing a test page and a short e-mail. Nothing happens for about 5 minutes and then it prints several pages with some garbled mess at the top.

#afettouhi do you connect to the printer via usb cable or lan cable? can you test both cases?
celticmagic commented 10 months ago
André Fettouhi (#afettouhi), 2018-10-11 21:03:00 UTC

The printer has wifi so I use that. I don't have an USB cable to test the USB connectivity. For som reason the printer didn't come with one. I have tested the printer with the same driver installed on my Arch Linux box and it works fine there. I use Solus OS on my HP laptop.
