Feature Request: Rearrange the order of your accounts #117

Closed ThomasHabets closed 9 years ago

ThomasHabets commented 9 years ago

Original issue 118 created by FlintB on 2011-11-09T07:30:09.000Z:

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Version 0.73 on Android version 2.3.7

Please provide any additional information below. I'm using Google Authenticator to manage many different accounts. I'd like the ability to rearrange the order of my accounts in GA.

ThomasHabets commented 9 years ago

Not related to this product. Please reopen in https://github.com/google/google-authenticator-android if applicable.

Meanwhile, until someone takes up the non-trivial task of adding a database column for sort order, adding the UI magic to make press-drag work correctly + update the database, why not simply changing parameter 7 (sort by) of the DATABASE.query call in getNames() to use EMAIL_COLUMN instead of NULL?

That way, even if the order is still less than ideal by default, at least it would be sorted by account name which a) can be changed, and b) can be sanely navigated through.

Unless I'm missing something and that simple change wouldn't really sort the output by account name?

Yes, please allow the ability to sort accounts in GA, or at least sort it by the account name, alphabetically. I have just 5 accounts but with it not sorting alphabetically on the username, stuff is scrambled all over based upon the order in which I added the accounts, which is to say it's not exactly logical.

Comment #4 originally posted by ray@vertigion.com on 2012-06-07T18:13:42.000Z:

I'm not sure why you need to sort by account name. Just have the order drag-able like everything else on the iPhone.

I expected Google to have updated the app to allow for rearranging already but they haven't. I have 7 accounts and it is so irritating, because the account that I most use is at the bottom and I keep having to scroll down just to find it. I can't imagine having more accounts, then finding for this account would start being a problem.

I have access to some 20 accounts using MFA, some accessed more than others at different times of the year. It would be most helpful to be able to drag an account to the top of the list for easy access, rather than have them appear in the order in which they were added.

Just wanted to update - I just found out that this is fixed! Click on "Legal Information," which will then enable you to click on the "Edit" button (that's a bug), and then you can click and drag the accounts to the order you desire!

On what version do you see this fixed? I'm unable to follow your flow on version 2.44.

I'm using GA version 1.1.4.757 on iOS 6.1.2. Maybe it's still having issues on Android? If so, shame on Google for not getting that fixed sooner on their own OS (and FYI - I definitely had the same problem before; this is the first time it worked on iOS for me)

Agreed ... the inability to do this is a pain in the butt. I've got 6 accounts, and have to strategically create my list of entries to get it sorted the way I want to. And if I ever change out one of them, I have to undo them all, then do it all over again.

Duo Security (www.duosecurity.com) offers an app as well that handles the same functions as GA, and provides ability to sort as well as icons. GA is an entry-level player in the TOTP market at this point.

Dear Google users,

We are aware that there is a need to support reordering accounts in Authenticator for Android and it is in our roadmap of issues to resolve. We are working on this and many other efforts to keep our users secure. Thank you for bringing this up and for being interested in the Authenticator app.

Appreciate the comment from Google, but mind you, you're nearly 2 years late to this thread (opened on November 2011). I'm not sure what "roadmap" items could possibly take 2 years on a simple TOTP app. Again, see my earlier comments above.

Yeah, in light of the current situation with security and some of us maintaing two-factor auth using GA, we NEED, NOT WANT, to have the ability to sort accounts.

Someone make a decision and make it happen.

Uggghhh, I don't have the luxury of removing all the accounts and then adding them back in the order I need them. My phone only holds the past 30 days of calendar days and it took me five hours of testing my phones date/time and then syncing to get all my info back! Now I'm looking at a day's work to put them in the right order!

The latest version of the app lets you reorder them after you click on the pen in the upper right corner of the screen, so need to remove and re-add them all.

I'm waiting for long on this issue. I've starting using Authy in parallel but it require to slide + click each time you want to change the account displayed, Google Auth is faster for this. Also Authy is not compatible with all website (base32 secret key seams not working). Please try to update the Google one for a feature as simple as that it's a shame not to do something, event the iOS version is better than Android one !!

Android 4.2.2, Google Authenticator v2.49, still lacks the ability to drag accounts around in the list in Authenticator. The accounts still appear only in the order in which they were added to the app.

On iOS, by contrast, I can drag the accounts to place them in whatever order I prefer.

C'mon Google! Android is your platform! Why would your platform suck compared to Apple's?????

This would be great to implement on Android. I have 4.2.2 with GA v2.49 and I would have to reload each site in the order I want to rearrange things. That involves turning off TFA on 6 websites, then turn them on 'in order'. Then, if my usage changes I would have to do the same again to move a code up higher so that I don't have to scroll. This should be a simple fix.

Please add this feature. I have a growing list of sites that I have enabled 2fa and this would be a huge help. As it is many don't adopt 2fa because it is cumbersome, not having this functionality reduces adopters.

I'm wondering whether any of the 114 people who have starred this issue have bothered looking at the code. I can tell you that I have, and it is not obvious how to change their current UI into something with a reorderable list; I have started my own attempt at writing the patch for it, and 450+ lines of code in, I'm still not able to reorder items, as the main UI panel requires a lot of changes to get that far, without interrupting the way the timer gets drawn.

Maybe one of you is an expert at Android and can release a patch for us; or you can wait until I release my patch; until then, due to the depth of the change required to deliver this seemingly simple request, I doubt begging for the feature is going to do much good.

The joys of open source! :)
