This project extends the hummingbot codebase and implements a thin layer on-top-of, that enables remote control and monitoring of bots. The idea is that bots have the ability to connect to local or remote message brokers and bridges various interfaces in the form of RPCs (Remote Procedure Calls) and asynchronous events (via PubSub channels). This enables bidirectional communication between bots and external services. The goal of this project is to enable remote control and monitoring of Bot instances towards a plugin-based approach of building HF AMM bots and the development of bot collaboration schemas in the future.
In the context of the current project the MQTT protocol is supported, though extending to support more protocols, such as AMQP and Redis, was taken into account. The commlib library is used for the implementation of the communication and messaging layer.

Furthermore, the MQTT bridge, implemented as part of the hummingbot client, forwards internal Events, Notifications and Logs to the MQTT broker.

The MQTT feature can be completely configured via global parameters in hummingbot client, or via direct editing of the client_config.yml
file.
Finally, the ID of the bot that is used for the construction of the bot-specific communication topics can be set via the instance_id
global configuration parameter. If left empty, a random UID is generated and used for each bot
deployment.

The bot_orchestration
layer of the hummingbot codebase introduces the mqtt
command
for managing connections to message brokers via MQTT transport.
The mqtt command includes three subcommands: start/stop/restart
.

Currently, the current implementation supports only the MQTT protocol for connecting to message brokers (feature releases will also support AMQP, Redis and Kafka). Thus a broker with MQTT interfaces is required to connect the bots. We suggest the following brokers:
Though, a huge advance of this architectural approach is that most message brokers support various transports for communication, beyond MQTT, such as STOMP, MQTT and STOMP over websockets for direct web integration, CoAP etc. For example, in the case of using a RabbitMQ message broker, you can communicate with bots via AMQP, MQTT, STOMP and MQTT and STOMP over websockets.
We included deployments for various message brokers. Currently only
docker compose deployments are developed. You can find deployment manifests and
scripts for EMQXv4, EMQXv5 and RabbitMQ message brokers under the
compose/
directory of this repository. Furthermore you can find an deployment that
includes an Observability layer for EMQXv5 using the Prometheus + Grafana
stack.
To enable ssl connections for the hummingbot client Just set the mqtt_ssl
parameter to True
.
This feature requires an already deployed message broker with SSL enabled.
For example, to configure EMQX to use SSL encrypted connections follow the instructions here.
For local deployments where the message broker and hummingbot bots are hosted on a local network or a highly secure private network, it is not mandatory to use SSL, as encryption/description processes will require a lot of computational resources and may hit system bottlenecks and failures as the number of connections and data exchange increases (e.g. having several bots and side components deployed).
Though, for scenarios where public message brokers are used (e.g. having a RabbitMQ deployed on AWS and bots executed locally), it is highly recommended to always use SSL connections to avoid stealing critical data from man-in-the-middle attacks.
MQTT endpoints provided by hummingbot bot instances can be accesses using common mqtt client libraries. Though any Message broker that supports the MQTT protocol can be used, such as RabbitMQ and clients can connect via several transports. For example, RabbitMQ supports the MQTT, AMQP, STOMP, Web-MQTT and Web-STOMP protocols. Web-enabled transports (Web-MQTT, Web-STOMP) can be used to access hummingbot bot resources (remote control and monitoring interfaces) from the web. This allows the implementation of web apps and web-based user interfaces for hummingbot environments.
The commlib-py Python library is recommended for developing side components as it implements common communication patters such as pure PubSub and RPCs, which are used on the bot side. For example, bot commands are implemented using the RPC pattern, that is not provided by default for the MQTT protocol.
Furthermore, the last contribution to this PR developed a remote client library in Python, for easily developing software and applications which interract with bot instances. The library is hosted at https://github.com/hummingbot/hbot-remote-client-py and provides a RemoteListener
and RemoteCommands
classes for both listening to bot events and sending commands remotely.
For test purposes, you can install and use the commlib-cli package.
