this is all well and good, but i'm having the same problem and i really don't
want to
be modifying my cios and risk bricking my wii just so i can run one (albeit
extremely
useful) app. i guess i will continue to use v0.62, with which i have no issues
at
all, even over smb, until this bug can be fixed without resorting to more
softmodding.

I have to agree with longelf. I'm using MPlayerCE mainly for DVD playback. As I
don't
want to play "backups" or cheat in any game I don't want to take the risk of
installing a cIOS. I have installed the new Homebrew Channel, DVDX v2 and the
latest
system update 4.2E. As MPlayer CE 0.75 does not support the new DVDX version I
upgraded to 0.76. Unfortunately this does not even start without having a cIOS
installed... ;-( I hope this will be fixed!

its not like theres any "real" risk when installing a cIOS. theres just as much
risk
installing a cIOS as there is any IOS, or an offical update for that matter
Original comment by MangoScango
on 29 Nov 2009 at 7:59
that's not really the point though. i have already taken the risk of installing
homebrew in the first place, so i am obviously willing to take that risk to
have a
wii that is more useful than a simple games console. however, previous
versions of
mplayer do not hang on startup, and i shouldn't have to modify my system just
to get
an application to launch.
in the interests of full disclosure, i did try and install the alternative cios
as
suggested, but got an error during the process, so i guess my wii does not have
the
fakesign bug any more after updating the wii to play the new super mario bros.
i
tried downgrading it to re-introduce the bug, as suggested in the various
readmes,
without success. now, i'm not technically challenged by any means, but found it
difficult to understand exactly what the authors were trying to tell me, so
figured
it would be safest not to go any further, especially when 0.62 works just fine
and
0.76 doesn't really have anything new that i need urgently.
regardless of all that, i consider this failure to launch an application bug,
and it
should be fixed in the application, not by modding my system any further. i
just
wanted to make sure the programmers who work so hard on this app don't judge
this bug
to be fixed by installing a new cios, and actually try to fix this problem with
the
next application update.
Original comment by long...@gmail.com

as an aside to all this, my main reason for trying 0.76 was to find out if the
smb
playback was stable, as for me it hasn't been since 0.62, the last stable
release for
me. i understand that others have been using later versions successfully over
smb,
but again this is because they have installed a custom ios. i still don't see
why
smb playback can work flawlessly in 0.62, without any ios modifications at all,
but
be broken in all future versions unless you modify your system. i was hoping
0.76
was more stable, but i can't even test it without a softmod, which doesn't work
for
me anyway. hello rock, hello hardplace, how are you today?

I know it may sound insane, but try again *WITHOUT* the nunchuck. I had hang
issues on
0.76 and eventually figured out that removing the nunchuck resolved my issues.
I've
logged it as issue 531
Original comment by tpb8675...@gmail.com

I'm not saying this doesn't need fixed. Theres no need for mplayer to use a
cIOS.
but right now, thats the fix. Do it or wait. You probably just need to use Dop
IOS
Mod to fakesign some IOSs, seeing as how your on 4.2.
And another thing, you can't expect them to just push out perfection within
days, and
in every release. They aren't paid to do this, they do it on their free time.
They
(probably) aren't professional programmers, and they're going to make mistakes.
And a
lot of times they don't know why a bug is there. thats why its called a bug
So just be patient
Original comment by MangoScango
on 29 Nov 2009 at 9:55
oh, i have no problem being patient, and as a programmer myself, i do
understand the
problems that come with it and how hard it is to find bugs. and the team
working on
this are doing a fantastic job, for me mplayer-ce is the killer wii app.
incidentally, i tried dop-ios, and got errors with that too, so i figured it was
probably best to stop trying before i did something horrible to my wii. and i
don't
have the nunchuk attached either.
i was surprised when super mario bros wanted to do a system update and didn't
install
4.2, it only went to 4.1. ho hum.

longelf, It's hard to fix this bug, because my wii has 3.2 system menu and I
can't
reproduce the bug
I'll try to install DVDx2 and delete cios202 to try to reproduce the bug.
Is the hang at the beginning? you only see Loging message and then freeze,
rigth?
I think this bug is related to
http://hackmii.com/2009/08/timing-is-everything-the-case-of-the-unsoftmoddable-w
ii/
I ported the bushing code to libogc but I haven't a boot2v4 to test the changes.
I did some tests with wildman and the easy solution was install hermes cios202
If you want to install cios use TBR (trucha bug restorer), but be sure that HBC
is
installed on ios60 or ios61, if not, install ios61 with NUS and reinstall HBC,
then
use TBR
If you want I can make some test programs to try to fix the bug without
installing
cios but I need that you contact me to test (rodries@gmail.com or
irc://irc.efnet.net/mplayer_ce)

longelf - same problem as you (in another thread). 0.76 works for me if I stick
in an
external USB hard drive before starting the programme. (not tried it with just
a USB
stick yet). No idea why .... I've not tried any ios installs either.
It's fine as long as I want to watch something from the HD - bit of a pain if I
want
to watch DVD, as the HD still needs to be plugged into the unit.

With this modified MPlayer beta, I get following output before it hangs:
Loading MPlayerCE v.0.761 b2 30/11 ....
IOS 202 NOT found, using DVDx
DVDx loaded
mplayer.conf found in: sd:/apps/mplayer_ce
Here, the Wii hangs again.
To debug it further, I did go the whole way and installed cIOS 202. This indeed
does
fix the problem.
Then I was reading about bug report #534 and tried what happens without cIOS
202 but
with a USB stick attached. And guess what: It works! Btw. it doesn't matter
which USB
port I use.
So either installing cIOS 202 OR attaching a USB stick seems to fix the problem.

Btw. when I start this MPlayer beta with a USB stick attached, it starts to the

MangoScango,
It's a really weird situation. Like many, my 4.2 wii hangs on v0.76 startup
(using
the traditional install method). The fact is - I needed the update for SDHC
support.
Regardless, anybody who has an updated wii is trapped. It's either do the cIOS
method
(scary)... or no DVD player for you. Which is unlike past versions were you
could
just choose a past version. But that isn't an option with DVDX issue and such.
Trapped and patient.
I personally was getting ready to donate money to Twiizers and the Mplayer CE
team.
So not everybody is looking to get something for free. I do appreciate the help.

Unfortunately, it is not fixed for me. With this version my Wii hangs and just

Again the workaround is to attach a USB stick.
