I would like it if the messages said something about where you are and the weather. Maybe how hard your last step was. There's a nice chance here for some flavor text about the terrain and vegetation.

At the very least the initial "break camp" message should be logged and go away after your first step.

The backlog could go in the same window as the buttons? Or just an "on top" div.

Maybe just start with sunset/sunrise notifications, to close this ticket.

Perhaps in the future you will get notifications for:

weather events
moonrise/moonset
"You are getting sleepy"
"You are getting thirsty"
"You rest for half an hour" / "You sleep for 8 hours"

Is it better to just have one, simple, scrolling message log?

Or the current message or two at the top, with another menu item to see the whole, giant log of the game?
