Workshops #6

I'd like to do a "new kind of workshop" at JSFest based on the workshopper material format.

With JSFest I'm expecting a lot of new people that are "dipping their toe" in to all these technologies. I'd like to open up space for them to dive deeper than talks allow if they are around in to the week after the "Main Events."

I'm sure we'll learn a lot about the best size, scope, and length of the workshops at the NodeSchool event later in the week but I need to start to get an idea of the budgeting side of things.

I'd like to have the capacity to handle anyone who decides to sign up. I think the best idea is to pick a size/scope and open up a few at a time starting Monday and then when each one fills up we just add more workshops until we fill up the week.

I want to keep these as cheap as possible to encourage people to sign up. That said, there are some costs: Venue (which varies a lot with size) and the cost of your time, potentially for an entire week. Also Dominic and Rod's flights and living arrangements.

What do ya'll think?

I think I'm cool with this; there's a tiny chance there may be a conflict with CampJS which we're organising in Melbourne this time and I'm committed to that already. It'll probably fall in Feb but venue & details are still being sorted out.

In a related note, I'm encouraging @timoxley to put in a talk proposal for JSFest, he did the Functional JavaScript workshopper app, is the main organiser of CampJS, I'm currently working with him on a couple of consulting projects and he's just an all-round good guy. I'm not sure if a Functional JavaScript talk fits the bill of what you're after for JSFest tho so that's in your hands but I can :+1: any proposal he puts in (and he's in Singapore so not as expensive to fly in as AU). Perhaps he may also be useful for assisting with workshops.

@maxogden Joyent has a great training space that can fit about 25 people comfortably, I'm thinking of putting up tickets for $10 with a cap of 25. if things sell out so fast that we want to increase capacity per workshop we'll have enough to cover the rental fee of a larger space (the rental prices seems be to in the $200 - $500 range).
