what do you think? I believed it may even contain a old version by @shastah

Thanks for bringing up this proposal.

Yes, scripts.irssi.org used to ship the original spellcheck-0.3.pl, but in 2015 some commits were added on top of that: https://github.com/irssi/scripts.irssi.org/commits/master/scripts/spellcheck.pl (They are all about disabling spell-checking of URLs, which I fixed differently.)

I'd like to continue development of the script here. How could we ensure that the two codebases don't diverge again?

if there is any pull request targeted to your script on scripts.irssi.org, you will be pinged. that way you should be able to jump on the discussion and avoid any divergence.
