...that should marginally speed up travis builds and therefore provide more time to build stuff.

I tried installing nox from nixpkgs before using the current method, but it has one downside: it requires the install of all the dependencies (including python3) from nixpkgs. With the current method, travis's python is used, and only the python packages are downloaded.

I believe using the nixpkgs package won't speed up travis builds.
