Adding a way to structure and administrate tags, triggers and variables #138

For large organisations a tag manager account can quite easily grow big in numbers of triggers, tags and variables.

For that reason it would be nice to ad some kind of structuring system to it. In Google Tag Manager there is folders, but I could also think of a more flexible system like tags or labels. For example if a custom variable is used for several tracking purposes, then a tagg or a label would be a better way of structuring it than a folder.

The user need is to find relevant settings easier in large environments.

Hi,

We have the same issue when using Matomo Tag Manager. Google Tag Manager has folders, and similar feature, which works great for multiple tags and subdomains. And have to agree with @tomper00 , labels would be a additional feature as well.

Hope to get solutions this soon.

UPDATE: I moved this comment to here https://github.com/matomo-org/tag-manager/issues/23

Possibly related, since it is for organizing your existing tags:

"It would be interesting to have the possibility to make some tags inactive, to be able to send them to a "trash" and then recover them. For example, I need to do a test on several tags without deleting them, but I can't (unless I haven't seen the feature). Otherwise MTM is cool! Good job." Source: On-Premise

@atom-box I think it is possible (for inactive tags): image

User comment:

"Organisational capabilities of tags, triggers and variables. Managing 40+ tag for just one product becomes a bit hard. Good naming convention solves this but some sort of way but being able to categorise on for example folders, tags (autofilled by event category) could be useful."

I am counting this user's question as a request for adding Folders in MTM:

"We had used Google Tag Manager to apply over 108 tags and 99 triggers, and we were able to make use of folders to organize them. Since Matomo Tag Manager does not offer folders to organize tags & triggers, how would you recommend best using it to apply over 100 tags?"

"I have considered using separate containers for different types of tags, but I'm concerned about loading multiple containers on a single page and the best way to do that."

This issue has been mentioned on Matomo forums. There might be relevant details there:
