HBO Max is now "MAX" in the US #454

Hi there. The HBO Max addon still works in the US. But the website "hbomax.com" now redirects to max.com. So if the addon stops working for Americans one day, that is something it keep in mind. Perhaps you should roll out an update that responds to max.com if hbomax.com is not responding. That way, we're not gonna have that issue. Alternatively you could just create a separate MAX addon with the new MAX branding. The latter might be a better idea, as MAX combines all the content from HBO Max and Discovery+. So it might use a different API than HBO Max. Because when I search for Discovery+ programs within the HBO Max addon now, I get nothing.

Hey @matthuisman!! A new possible solution might be possible. Recently MAX became available via "YouTube PrimeTime" in the USA and I decided to try it. Surprisingly we are able to get Full HD 1080p on Linux or Windows and they include access to the linear HBO Channels too. Since you've been exploring with YouTube video playback with the Trailer Addon perhaps you could creating an addon with PrimeTime Support. I am willing to donate my subscription for testing. image

What about 4k and Atmos? There was a video on Twitter just yesterday showing their app not just shrinking the screen, but doing it during a scene even BEFORE the end credits started. This is why we need these addons. Most native apps are just unusable for serious viewers.

Just wondering if you had any updates for those of us logging in to max.com in the US? If there are still plans to update current plugin or create a new one?

HBO MAX was deactivated today in Latin America and is only available through the max.com domain and the MAX app.

@Distanasia Read the thread. He's working on a separate addon for Max, as most of the world still uses HBO Max and does not migrate over till later this year and next.

yeah, can confirm. they're probably gonna roll worldwide access to max.com in the next couple of months. and I don't even have a Chromecast anymore at home...

Just wanted to say that for some strange reason my Argentina account still works when I use a VPN set to one of the countries in Europe where HBOMAX is still active..........

that's not strange at all. your account is not "from Argentina", as your email can be from anywhere in the world, and your payment method doesn't dictate the origin's account, the system just works with ip geolocalization. so someone from Italy can be travelling to South America, and once they are here, their account won't work on the app, because they're here and that's the only thing checked. they would have to use a VPN with a European server just like yourself in order to trick the app as if they were still over there.

this is one of the main reasons people use VPNs, besides security :P

I have tried using my Argentina login on HBOMAX website and app and it doesnt work........however it works when I use my VPN set to a European country in Kodi..............

I understood perfectly. in that case it doesn't work because you're using THEIR app and THEIR website, and they have enhanced methods to detect exactly where you are. you have to use a top notch VPN to fool that, most of the cheap ones don't work (mine doesn't work either). the kodi addon wasn't built by warner. if it were, it also wouldn't work.

Noboday said the addon was built by Warner, however it uses the old api from HBOMAX and I am just reporting that MY ARGENTINA MAX.COM account still works using a VPN/DNS from a country that still uses HBOMAX........it was you who brought up their website and app, but unsure why as this is a chat for the kodi add on

lol, as I said, this is not strange or unusual kid. I set my VPN to an Australian server to watch different content that the ones I can watch in my country on the Paramount app, just because that's luckily a shittier one that is not so good at detecting where I am. it doesn't matter that my account is not "from Australia". and I can't do that with the HBO or Disney ones, because they have better security. what you're experimenting is just another example of that, that's it. get over it.

EDIT: just because it seems it is really hard for you to understand, if you took a plane to Europe right now, and connect your phone to a local wifi over there, the HBOMAX app and site ARE GOING TO WORK. doesn't matter that you made you account in Argentina. the only thing that matters legally for the comapny is where you are located. that's it.

ok, I have to spill it up: maybe you're in Europe, but you're obviously not in one of the countries where HBOMAX is still active. that's why you had to use a vpn in order to the kodi addon to connect. and as I said, the site and app are only gonna work if you're really physically located in one of those countries. because they check location really well. and that's why they doesn't work where you are, even it it's in Europe. it's not the account nor the app, it is the location kid. go to one of those countries where HBOMAX is still active and your account is going to work on the app and site over there. the kodi addon couldn't care less where you're located.

I have a Paramount+ latin american account and I can connect as if I were in Australia and watch their content on the app with no problems at all. so I don't know what you're talking about kid lol.

That being said, HBO Max is set to transform into Max in Europe on October 26, 2024. However, we may still be able to use the HBO Max addon for another year through UK, Germany, and Italy VPN locations, as they remain off-limits for now due to a long-term distribution deal with Sky, which runs through 2025. From my understanding, those will be the last remaining HBO Max markets. After that, the old api will most likely shut down, thus rendering the addon useless.

I don't really understand this. I can't use my hbo max account on the login page as it's in a different format to the USA max login. There wouldn't be any point in using my VPN because I can't get past the login page.

HBO Max will be replaced by MAX in many EU countries (Iberia, Scandinavia, Central Europe) on May 21st. fingers crossed for the new add-on :)

Hi guys, same here (argentina), several months since it changed. I managed to have androidTV (x86) working on my htpc as a temporary solution, but i definitely miss all that kodi goodness! Is this the right place to be updated about @matthuisman work? Is there any other post about the max addon progress?

Cool, so still got a month of add on working

The addon stopped working today at least in Finland. I can still login but trying to open anything (like Series, Movies or My list) in the app it gives an error: "API request failed Server Error: Sorry, we can't find that title right now. Please try again later."

Search and Continue watching just say "No items"

Unfortunately, MAX US users have been without an add-on for KODI for a year. More from European countries are coming.
