Open mhoo opened 10 years ago
We won't know the total count until we get all the signups. I expect the ticket structure this year to yield more SO's and Kids than previous years.
also, adding @aemaier to this thread.
@mhoo Good idea. Do you have any interest in helping to facilitate these activities? I could help secure supplies, but this is not my area of expertise :)
also adding @thelmka my mom! :)
@mhoo , i will bring my crochet hooks, anna and I will buy the supplies but we will need a list from you. # of skeins of yarn needed, brushes, color sets, etc. But you get to be the teacher for knitting and watercolor, I can teach the basics of crochet. What ideas do your kids have on activities they would like to do or learn? What are there ages?
How about this crazy idea - we teach them some node basics!
That's the plan for the kids track.
Also, this was in another thread, but the first day of content the Copter room will be open for the kids track. Could also bring the SO track in to program copters.
@thelmka Our (@mhoo and me) kids are 8,9, and 12 - I think all of them will be interested in the node intro and copter programing. @mikeal would it be helpful for me to (help) run these for the kids track?
I'm not sure I can pull together enough laptops for my kids - so this might be of issue for the SO Kids track in general.
Is 'Learn You The Node.js For Much Win!' our target for the kids track, or should we do a version that is more "kids" focused?
I think having the option for "learn to node" is a great idea. I would be hesitant to have that be the only option, however. Lots of folks are happy for their SOs to be programmers, but don't want that for themselves. I worry that they might feel proselytized to.
Maybe its "learn to node" with a backup plan of someone going on a hike / swimming / something else? Maybe that's been the plan all along. :)
@lyle I think it would be a blast to have you and the kids assist with the Copter track! Also, having a couple of kids "on the inside" often helps the other children feel more comfortable and shortens the shy period.
@lyle oh yeah, i hadn't even thought about the fact that we'd need extra computers. I'm suppose to have a Kano coming in the mail soon, is something low cost like this an option? If it's cheap enough we can just buy a bunch.
@lyle oh, and it would definitely help if you ran the kids track :)
I feel like "Learn you node" is a great way to learn node if you're already semi-comfortable with programming. I think we could do something around copters that was simpler and also a little more engaging.
adding @fortoria
also, should we start a separate thread for the Kids Track or do we think they'll be intertwined enough that we should just keep them together in this thread?
Thanks. @mikeal - Seems like intertwined is fine. In the past, have you had a liason or how have you collaborated with Walker Creek staff to get hikes/tours/swimming arranged?
We have a few contacts we work with there. Prior years we've had some constraints because of overlapping things happening at the Ranch but because we're now one of the largest groups they do we're the only thing happening. Basically, we figure out when we want to have those kinds of things and then ask them if the times work. If we do it enough in advance almost any day/time works but sometimes there are constraints, particularly when it comes to getting a life guard.
On the second full day I plan on integrating some of this stuff as an option for the regular attendees as well so if you'd like to an SO and/or Kids only hike/tour/swim you'll want to do it on Friday.
I think SO and Kids tracks will be mixed a bit so planning in one thread seems good.
Kids (SO welcome too) on Friday copters seems good and a swim in the afternoon would be a good way for everyone new to learn the property.

@mhoo - water color somewhat (I can do it/show what I do but not confident teaching) but more specifically nature journal hiking is something I have expertise in. I'm in no way opposed to having programming sessions with kids but I'd also like to take good advantage of our beautiful setting, proximity to trails and wildlife.
Also, if you (or anyone else) has experience with fiber arts, there's a nice tie-in with programming; directions following in order to achieve a specific garment. I know only the very basics of knitting, crochet and weaving.
kicking this thread.
what supplies to we need, cause I need to order these soon.
also, i'd like to work out the schedule so that we can coordinate with the camp to have naturalists for hikes and life guards for swim time.
(repost) Great. Just to reintroduce myself, I don't have any children of my own but I'm more than happy to assist with general kid wrangling/watching and helping with activities. Indoor and outdoor education (professional) experience in arts, crafts, nature and garden/farm ed.
@fortoria it would be wonderful if you helped with kid wrangling planning orginizing. @mhoo and I are getting married this Saturday and are a little wrapped up with all that. And are planning on hitting NodeConf supplie requests and plans early next week.
@mhoo plans to run a couple adult (kids welcomed) water color sessions.
I plan to be kid wrangling the whole time and plan to bring kid art supplies.
Congrats on your marriage @lyle and @mhoo!
Here is a draft of the schedule for the SO/Kids track. The plan is to get feedback on this thread, and send out a final schedule to the SO email list this coming Friday or the following Monday. Please reply by end of day Thursday, 6/26 if you want to comment on or edit this schedule.
Also, anyone who has volunteered to run a session: Please let us know what materials you need sometime this week so that we can order. Hopefully @mikeal will have numbers posted by tomorrow (Monday 6/23) to help with figuring this out. If anyone wants to help facilitate who hasn't been tagged, or has been tagged who doesn't want to facilitate, let me know. Thanks everyone!

I would like to do a tydye with markers and very kid friendly craft on saturday morning 9:30. Bring something you already own that has stains and make it fun and wearable again. (If it is like last year we may have some sponsor shirts to use too.) Fiber arts saturday 1:30 I will share some basic crochet stiches and use yarns and twigs for a windchime project. Feel free to bring your hooks and yarn but some will be available.
Congrats to @lyle and @mhoo. See you soon.
@mikeal / @aemaier any word on count for the amount of kids we may have in the Kids programing track? And do we think they will have laptops? Perhaps we should be thinking of the group I am running as the older kids, or an alternative group to @thelmka's craft group. My concern is really about the kids not having computers to work with. Yes on the copters on the afternoon on Friday.
Preliminary numbers: 50 Significant Others, 30 kids over 3 years old.
@lyle if you have some cheap laptops I can purchase on amazon I can buy them today and have them in time.
Here are the responses in terms of ages of all the children, kids not yet 1 year old I've marked as 0:
10, 3, 1, 6, 3, 9, 6, 2 1, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0, 0, 8, 0, 4, 1, 8, 4, 2, 9, 1, 8, 3, 0, 6, 2, 4, 2, 11 9, 6, 9, 6, 6, 6, 4, 3, 0, 9, 9
Looks like for the mature kids (7 and up) we have about 18 kids (including mine). Some of these may be interested in Programing, but we can do great craft type stuff. Lets skip the purchasing of laptops. If we have enough kids with laptops to warrant a session on getting up and running with node then I will make sure that happens. @mhoo suggested that the kids that are really into the programing tack could go to some of the normal-track sessions. Does that sound ok, or should we make sure the programing track happens? I am good either way. But have different research to do at this point for purchasing suggestions.
Materials for Older Kids track I assume that these projects will take place in the dinning hall, we might want to have butcher paper to help in cleanup.
Cardboard Sculpture/Structure Creating
Making Clay Things and Firing them in the Camp-Fire
Working Phone/Cat5 wire into Jewelry and such
@mikeal if we definitely want a dedicated Kids Programing track then we will want all participants to be able to pair up and have a machine. Here is a good $200 chrome-book, which, with some tweeking, can take Node. I can take the students through Learn You The Node.js For Much Win - with some basics as well. But I have to say I am getting pretty excited about all these other non-digital things we can do with the kids. + Copters.
@lyle ok, all ordered. I sent you the confirmation email just to doublecheck that I got everything.
The chrome books were limited to 3 per order so that's how many I got.
7/4: watercolor basics 7/5: watercolor journaling - good for ages 10-12 up - a very focused 8 or 9 year old may not make it the whole session but could opted out as needed - class size ideally doesn't exceed 25, if @thelmka & @aemaier or @fortoria want to join me we could push class size to 30+
Supplies: Paint set - will need one set for each participant: paint 1st choice or if less expensive is needed: paint 2nd choice
Paper
plus one pack of
we will need plastic/paper cups for water - which we can probably borrow from the kitchen
for the journaling class: clipboards - maybe you already have these?? always handy - if too much $$$ let me know and I will see if I can get boards from hardware store cut to size
Fiber Arts 7/5 1:30 - 4 ish - I could do a basics of crochet with @thelmka? what shall we do OR another Watercolor session I am flexible -
Scheduling looks good to me, combining "hike" with journaling - is more like walk, sit, paint - very little exercise involved - but I can come up with some kind of "painting nature" cheat sheet so folks that didn't come Friday can come Saturday - will need 30 min prep time in dinning hall to prep to go out and paint if getting supplies is an issue please let me know
how many of these paint sets do i buy?
i'm going to assume 30.
One last thing: space.
We have two smallish rooms we can use on the back side of the bath house. This would probably be better than using the cafeteria.
@mhoo your first choice watercolor set won't ship quick enough (it'll take like a month), but the price is fine. do you have another top choice or should i go with the cheaper one you suggested?
@mhoo what do you think about this one? http://www.amazon.com/Prang-Washable-Watercolor-Assorted-16016/dp/B000QE7ZCG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1403817909&sr=8-3&keywords=prang+watercolors
@mikeal, @mhoo says a 8 base color set is good and importantly a pallet for mixing colors is important, so the lid of some sets has that. this set, though pricy has the pallet in the lid.
As for space, the rooms sound good. For the clay work it might be best to be outside near a hose.
ok, just ordered. the only one i was actually able to get a good enough guaranteed shipping date on was the second choice from the original post.
also, the 30-inch paper wouldn't arrive for months. the only option i could find for that size (30-inch) was to buy rolls of it that we'll need to cut :(
@mhoo and I will get the 30" paper at a local art shop and bring it with us.
@micheal, if you can change the shipping of the laptops to my place I can get a jump on them being in dev mode and install node on them: Lyle Troxell 10880 Alba Rd, Unit A Ben Lomond, CA, 95005
I'll look for a printer.

Feel free to grab some staff on the 3rd to help you get them in dev mode at the ranch if you like.

Schedule has been updated to reflect the comments. PLEASE LET ME KNOW if anything still needs to be adjusted. Email with the schedule will be going out to the SO track this weekend!! My plan when I send out the email is to ask kids to bring t-shirts they want to dye for @thelmka's session (we can use extra sponsor t-shirts but they'll be huge).
@lyle If it would be helpful I can also ask that if any of the older kids have their heart set on learning to program, they bring an extra laptop if possible. Not sure if this would help since the laptops might not be set up, but as @mikeal said we can always have staff members help out with that. Let me know if you think that's a good idea. Also, I am calling your segment the "Kids Technology Track." This can include both computer and non-computer activities that are a little older and more complex than the Arts and Crafts Track. If need be, we can always merge the two kids tracks together at certain points as well. I designated Friday afternoon Node Copter/Fireworks time for all on SO track who are interested--I think that @aulvi may be available to help with this as well.
Thanks everyone!
@aemaier all this sounds good. I would love to get a feel for how many of the kids want to learn to code a bit and would like to bring a machine. Kids Tech Track sounds good to me.
@lyle the chromebooks arrived, i'll bring them to the July 2nd dry-run at NPM Inc if you're around.
@lyle
Sending out the email schedule to SO track today. Asked that those who plan to bring an extra laptop respond to the email--will let you know if I hear back from anyone.

How many people will we have for the adult SO track?
