Change name of the game? #2077

Suggestion for 'Mesetint':

I suggest some instances of the MTG name can remain to reduce disruption, such as the repo name.

To avoid bikeshedding i suggest we do not consider any other name and just go with a name celeron55 is happy with (and has used before).

paanrama commented 6 years ago

I think that Minetest Engine needs a new name much more than Minetest Game (it can be better), but it is a very advanced and powerful engine, and it don't deserve the word test in its name). Additionally if MTE change its name, maybe MTG can maintain its current name because it is the game used to test MTE.

Fixer-007 commented 6 years ago

Test is a big curse on the name :(

Ezhh commented 6 years ago

Speaking as an MTG dev, I don't consider MTG's main purpose as a test of the engine, regardless of what it may have originally been. The "test" part of the name comes from the engine name, not from the purpose of the game.

If the engine name is ever changed from Minetest, the game can simply become new-name_game. This won't include "test" (or if it does, something will have really gone wrong).

zayuim commented 6 years ago

I think that we should go with a "Voxel" branding for both the Engine and the Game. I have two suggestions that I saw in this thread. I don't have what it takes to be an artist, but I've done some proof of concepts:

VoxTension (engine)

voxtension svg voxtension text svg

VoxelGarden (game)

header

This is of course based of the famous Minetest/VoxTension game "VoxelGarden" by Casimir and uses the same logo

ghost commented 6 years ago

@zayuim … You, Sir, won this thread.

zayuim commented 6 years ago

@4w Thanks!

I've prepared a logo, this time the engine logo matches the game logo much better.

voxeltension voxelgarden

ghost commented 6 years ago

The font is debatable but the engine logo is awesome.

DartPower commented 6 years ago

Logo 10/10! 👍 But font maybe use... Press Start 2P?

Poikilos commented 6 years ago

Cool but please explain why "tension" matches the engine--what about Voxtension (lowercase 't') or voxtension (all lowercase) so it is about "extension" (modding api) instead of "tension" (not sure why)?

TMcSquared commented 6 years ago

Names don't always have to have a concretely connected meaning with what they are naming.

benrob0329 commented 6 years ago

I think that labeling it like voXtension would help with the idea that it is supposed to be eXtended.

Ezhh commented 6 years ago

Just to point out the obvious... MTG isn't going to get renamed to the name of an already existing game.

zayuim commented 6 years ago

@poikilos Voxtension sounds/looks good.

@benrob0329 I don't like the look of the capitalised 'X'

@Ezhh I know its just in my head I imagined VoxelGarden becoming the default game (because I believe that we should go our own way from Minecraft).

TumeniNodes commented 5 years ago

I'm back with a few more

[01] Elysian adjective: beautiful or creative divinely inspired, peaceful and perfect

[02] Aeonian adjective: eternal, everlasting

[03] Saorsa (my favorite) noun: freedom, liberty

[04] Faodail (2d fav) noun: a lucky find

The last two are Scottish Gaelic words. Saorsa, fits well, because it embodies the overall idea of the game and the community, as an opensource project. And, when pronounced it sounds like a strange way of saying "source" Faodail, is a very nice, complimentary name to the game.

I like to try to think of names which do not point the obvious physical characteristics of the game, or the type of game it is.

Possibly Saorsa could go in place of Minetest (engine) and One of the others in place of Minetest Game. I think Faodail fits best as it is the only other Scottish Gaelic word in this list and, it can describe 2 aspects... The game is a "lucky find" and..., during gameplay, ores and minerals, etc. found while mining//digging are "lucky finds"

Talk amongst yourselves..., I'll just be over here ------>

There really is no need to use names which describe it as a voxel type game, etc... as any search engines will have that sort of info in them, picking up on the description of the game from the web pages. And those sort of names feel almost like beating a dead horse

Fixer-007 commented 5 years ago

Elysian, Aeonian, Saorsa, Faodail

Sounds nice, but nobody will remember it

TumeniNodes commented 5 years ago

I can understand where you're coming from but, I think Saorsa, for the game engine would catch on fairly quick. As I said, the word sounds similar to saying "source", with an "a" at the end. Although, it might also sound more like "soursha", depending on who is pronouncing it.

The Saorsa Engine or The Saorsa Game Engine

And then the game example (Minetest Game), changes to Faodail, and adding the meaning of the word to the description, and how it is fitting, would help that to be memorable as well.

I would think, in no time..., both would become quite memorable, because they both have an actual meaning, and make sense. Both names take the project to a new level, and take it out of that whole "test" stigma, and also clearify the project is not merely a copy of MC They give both parts of the project their very own identity..., finally

Ezhh commented 5 years ago

Me trying to work out how to say Faodail:

Fa... od... ail? Fa... o... ail? Fa... ail?

Uhm.

(Sorry, please forgive me!)

fay - oh - dale or fay - oo - dale

paramat commented 5 years ago

I like the idea of something wholly or partly Finnish or Finnish-sounding, 'mese' and 'oerkki' are both Finnish derived. So Scottish words seem unsuitable. For example, not a serious suggestion, 'cube land' in Finnish is 'Kuutiomaata'. But anyway i have little hope for this getting anywhere before 5.0.0, it may never change, i'm more relaxed now, choosing a name is so difficult once you're used to a (even bad) name.

TumeniNodes commented 5 years ago

choosing a name is so difficult once you're used to a (even bad) name

especially when it is already so well established. I agree

paramat commented 5 years ago

Random thought: 'Oerkki garden'.

Ezhh commented 5 years ago

Random thought: 'Oerkki garden'.

Totally need to add mobs then.

sirrobzeroone commented 5 years ago

This may have already been suggested but latin for engine is ingenium, although it's translation via google is more like - which referred to one's ability to create things

Oddly mine in latin is Mea (although mea is more about ownership not digging)...not sure if C55 originally came up with Mesa from there?

anyways just my thought:

Mesa Ingenium

ghost commented 5 years ago

How about 'Minetest'?

Reading this thread gives me goose bumps, please, be careful with your imagination

Parasitoid commented 5 years ago

Although the topic is about the game, not the engine, but let me suggest another kind of naming, for example EVE: Extentable Voxelworld Engine ...

paramat commented 5 years ago

"Boring"? :D

C1ffisme commented 5 years ago

@paramat :ok_hand: :weary: :100:

I will say though, calling the game "Boring Game" might be a good branding strategy. It's easy for people to remember, it has some bearing on what the game is and it's a good pun.

gaycomputers commented 5 years ago

How did nobody suggest Opencraft

benrob0329 commented 5 years ago

If only nodecore hadn't been used by a game amiright...

Ideas:

Also, I vote to have MTG keep the Minetest name and fully become the continuation of the 0.3-era game.

p-ouellette commented 5 years ago

Minetest Classic ?

Because it is the original game.

paramat commented 5 years ago

I'm neutral about doing this now, the current name may be boring, but changing the name is very difficult =)

TumeniNodes commented 5 years ago

The most difficult aspect, is finding an actually "good name" In all honesty, I feel it would be more efficient use of time, focusing on mechanics etc to be addressed, than worrying about changing the name of the game.

Some, feel MTG itself should eventually be abandoned, which I disagree with... it should be picked through, pruned, tweaked and polished Most changes to the engine, have been related to MTG, making MTG an important part of the project. Why put all that time (years of many people's work) to waste? That would be an absolute shame and insult. There needs to be an overall goal, and achievements added.

Other games definitely need to be worked on but I honestly feel setting up an entirely new repo for MTG tweaking should be created, to pick through it all with a fine toothed comb, almost reverse engineering the entire lump, a complete overhaul and remodeling so to speak. Focusing on one thing at a time

I view the current MTG as sort of a "rough draft" where ideas, etc were thrown in as they came along... like a catch-all. Now it all needs to be sorted out.

paramat commented 5 years ago

My opinion about MTG is increasingly that we need to move on to new games and stop torturing ourselves by focussing on and perpetuating MTG, being the high quality mess it is. The name is bad but that's the name, it doesn't do any harm, choosing a new name is excruciating and will feel wrong whatever we choose. We need to move on anyway, so closing this as not worth the time and effort.

TMcSquared commented 4 years ago

Forgive me for being blunt, but, this is part of the reason I am not actively a part of the MT community anymore. Just because the community is indecisive about stuff does not mean good decisions can't be made. Look, people already "feel wrong" about the current name. Choosing a different one will change nothing. For crying out loud, put all the semi-good names into a list, randomly choose three and vote on them. It's not that difficult to make decisions. And again....not everyone will like it, it's expected in a project like this.

TMcSquared commented 4 years ago

Also mostly everyone agrees in this thread that MTG needs a new name, so that's not controversial in the typical sense of the word.

paramat commented 4 years ago

It does not matter if the community is indecisive (which is inevitable because people have differing opinions), the core devs are not, they make the final decisions. There was useful discussion between core devs here and a core dev added +1 to my closing comment.

This issue was useful to test the idea of a new name, and in how it made us realise that however bad the current name is, we are used to it, and choosing a new one is extremely difficult. It became increasingly non-serious, relaxed and humorous. Considering that, this issue went well. The way you have taken it so negatively as some kind of proof of crisis in MT development only shows your own negativity, delusion and dislike of MT. So it is best you do not post here.

For crying out loud, put all the semi-good names into a list, randomly choose three and vote on them. It's not that difficult to make decisions.

That is a very bad suggestion. Good development depends on careful decisions, not randomness, and democracy is a disaster for development. Besides, we do not have to make a decision, it seems we now prefer keep the current name.

LoneWolfHT commented 4 years ago

Does not have the word 'test' in it. Does not have the word 'mine' in it.

You can spell 'mesetint' only taking the letters in 'minetest', so technically it does :eyes:

After a little thought I'm :+1: for Mesetint as an engine/MTG name (preferably not the same name for both)

Secret-chest commented 1 year ago

I'd like if we weren't a cheap Google Play Minecraft clone.
