(1) Compare model with same fixed effect but different random effects. This is to select between whether to have the regional effect. Currently done with AIC, but requires more detail investigation whether this is suitable.

(2) Compare model with different fixed effects. This is to automatize the selection of external variables to be included in the fixed effects.

Although more computational heavy, but using bootstrapped prediction error for model selection should be much more appropriate.
