[ ] add a VERSION file (I'd call the current state of the site something in the 2.x.x realm)
[ ] drop some reference to the VERSION file into the website so we can see which version we have deployed currently at a glance

this sounds good but I'd say just show the commit hash for HEAD instead, it's one less thing to remember to update.
