Where will v4 be held #1

Closed erskingardner closed 2 weeks ago

erskingardner commented 2 weeks ago

This is to kick off a discussion about different locations for v4.

One great suggestion from the closing panel was to make it adjacent to another conference outside the bitcoin world.

G had a good suggestion to have it before the Oslo Freedom Forum next May. Pros: adjacent area where nostr is really important. Cons: it's Europe again.

Other ideas:

Would love to hear more suggestions.

Antarctica. Let's go.

Central America or South America would be my vote.

rockstardev commented 2 weeks ago

+1 on South America from me.

And then Australia would be cool as well because Stella said Julian would attend.

alexgleason commented 2 weeks ago

Buenos Aires is a bucket list city for me.

should be Uruguay Then, but my vote goes to Buenos Aires

staab commented 2 weeks ago

South America or Africa would be very cool. There's some of bitcoinery in East Africa, Zambia and other places. Using nostr out there might also give us an idea of how to better serve people with poor internet.

jurjendevries commented 2 weeks ago

V4 should not be at Github ;-) Talking about artists, bitpopart complained why the agenda was on Github, as he is not a developer he totally didn't understand the UX. Also for me, with some git background it wasn't a good user experience. I was not able to select text from the calendar on laptop, mobile view was very hard to scroll around, and AI LLM was not able the scrape the data to reuse it to build ical files or so. Let's discuss this question by https://njump.me/nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqak8r2hr5jglrk0wc37t59lz98x6gyf6pwaku6hpwakhvslznjh6qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uq3wamnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwdehhxarj9e3xzmny9uqzp9d2vatl2jz4d6qqz3tcx2qah7jxfmqp84t66tmjdj9zeh6z7faz4nsmsf and hopefully next year we have some great nostr integrations for event tooling.

Consider scheduling before a FOSS conference.

Nostrica venue is unrivaled in nostr world history.

I like the idea, but I cannot think of one that would be a good neighbor to us.

Nostrera — Prospera, Bitcoin Beach — Island Edition 🏝️

https://www.prospera.co/

This place is amazing because it’s not just a conference together… every morning, nostriches eat breakfast in the same places, and can go to the beach together. It enriches the community experience.

Happy to connect you with the founders of the city and resort!

FOSS conference

I like the idea, but I cannot think of one that would be a good neighbor to us.

True.

Here's another idea: Instead of scheduling before a FOSS conference, why not be completely independent of other events and instead invite more FOSS talks/topics/speakers/participants to v4 itself? NIH syndrom is real, and pretty widespread in Nostr dev AFAICS, so I think it would be valuable to connect more with the wider FOSS ecosystem on home turf.

After all, none of Nostr would actually work without the vast amount of FOSS and open protocols underlying every single piece of it. And there's uncounted potential of existing FOSS projects adding support for Nostr-based publishing, authentication, encryption, zapping, WoT, etc..

andrelojafree commented 2 weeks ago

We can do it in Madeira Island. All the FREE Madeira team can help and there’s already a big Bitcoin and Nostr community, including Sovereign Engineering!

smolgrrr commented 2 weeks ago

Basti, I get your point about NIH, but it goes both ways. I've been suggesting you check out nostr for years, yet you still don’t use it. I appreciate that you're incorporating more nostr ideas into kosmos, and thanks for running a relay, and for your work on integrations.

You’re always welcome at nostr conferences—Alex Gleason’s talks on the fediverse bridge are a great example. While FOSS projects that embrace both Bitcoin and nostr ideas are rare, most devs interested in the tech are already using it. You're using the Mastodon bridge; why not give nostr a try?

Everyone in FOSS is invited to talk on nostr, but it really helps if you’re using the system. Why not suggest some concrete projects that could be interested, and help with outrech. I already did sockethub, for example. Then people starting out on a nostr integration can come and give a talk, similar to Alex.

@melvincarvalho My npub is npub1raustrrh5gjwt03zdj8syn9vmt2dwsv9t467m8c3gua636uxu89svgdees and you obviously have issues with discovery and/or relay selection.

dadofsambonzuki commented 2 weeks ago

@gsovereignty had it right.

Do it before/after the Oslo Freedom Forum.

miketwenty1 commented 2 weeks ago

Just want to throw it out there if you ever wanted to do one before/after around tabconf (2025, 2026+) I'd be be happy to help with venue space similar to what Baltic Honey Badger did this year.

Great to see! I Normally see you interact via fediverse. Come up with a list of speakers and projects in FOSS that we can invite to the next Nostr Conf, and how we can do some outreach. We need more bridges!

Do it before/after the Oslo Freedom Forum.

I respectfully disagree with combining a Nostr conference with a freedom conference.

Promoting Nostr as 'freedom tech' is risky. The opsec isn't strong enough for most users—messages are stored permanently, signed, and can be linked to IP addresses, posing real risks. We've already over-promised on this front; pushing it further could have serious consequences for those relying on it for protection.

The current formula is working.

dadofsambonzuki commented 2 weeks ago

Agreed on the current limitations. I didn't mean promoting nostr at OFF per se, but nostr devs and power users hearing from and being inspired by the stories of those that need freedom tech the most. Buenos Aires would also be cool AF. 🤟 -------- Original Message --------On 25/08/2024 13:21, Melvin Carvalho wrote:

derekross commented 2 weeks ago

I'd love to see Nostr stand on its own without piggybacking onto Bitcoin or a Bitcoin community to try to onboard the next wave of people outside the Bitcoin conversion.

Music festivals or art festivals adjacent locations and time frames would be interesting and help to facilitate more growth IMO.

Plus, it gives us a chance to orange pill them in the process. Remember, the purple pill helps the orange pill go down.

As for the location, I like the Australian suggestion. Derek Ross https://NostrPlebs.com https://NostrPlebs.com/s/derekross

Great suggestions. I'm still mega-bummed I had to pull out last minute for Nostriga. I look forward to the day we finally have enough of a parallel system in place where we're not subject to ridiculous bureaucracies.

Anyway..that all being said, I'm a fan of the LatAm option, and in particular Florianopolis (aka; Floripa) It's the perfect beach city, and a 90min flight from 5 major capitals in LatAm (see file attached). FYI - Latin America is usually the second fastest adopter of social tech (Brazil for example, is right behind the USA).

It could also piggy-back off of either Nifty Nei's even in Jan 2025, or if that's too soon, then maybe SatsConf later in 2025.

AND it's got the benefit of being the opposite season, so I guess it means there can be two events done in the year. Also...I bought Nostripa.com, so happy to donate that.

I've attached a little presentation - which has a better overview. Enjoy!

I wanted to pop over here & just show support for the idea of aligning with something art or music related. As somebody that falls more into the "normie" category, I feel tools for those avenues are pretty solid & fairly easy to use at this point, and those groups have potential to bring some capital & audiences into the space. No specific event or location to suggest, just thoughts. 😊

alexgleason commented 2 weeks ago

I asked chatgpt to list annual events in South America in good tourist locations:

1. Carnival (Brazil)

2. Inti Raymi (Peru)

3. Feria de las Flores (Colombia)

4. Festa Nacional da Uva (Brazil)

5. Vendimia (Argentina)

6. Semana Santa (Various countries)

7. Festival de la Candelaria (Peru)

8. Fiesta de la Vendimia (Chile)

9. Tango Festival and World Cup (Argentina)

10. Oktoberfest (Brazil)

Time to go North. Northstr. Levi Finland. Plenty of flights. Sat with Marti and his mates having dinner and they offered to help organise. Saunas, raindear, skiing, some cracking resorts, range of hotels, ski lodges.

Alternatively, if done in North America (USA):

Would be interesting to see a nostr "unconference" piggyback on conferences like ces.tech, rsaconference.com, and sxsw.com
